An undergraduate anthropology text that is worth it
By Robert E. Fullilove
I reviewed this book for a former student who is now in a PhD program at another institution and who is teaching her first course as a adjunct. Kottak's text was recommended, and when I got a copy, I managed to read it over the weekend.
It is a tour de force. It might not look like a textbook, but it is hugely user friendly, very well illustrated, full of the kinds of teaching aids that make lecturing on its content that much easier, and very informative. I am not an anthropologist, but I have been teaching for 50 years now. I know how easy my task as a classroom manager will be when I am working with material that my students like and that they are also likely to read.
"Culture" fills that bill and then some. I learned stuff reading it. And just so you know why it might be worth your while to attend to my praise... I have been teaching at Columbia University since 1990, have won multiple teaching awards, and I have had more than 2,500 students pass through my classes. I know quality when I see it, and this text gets my vote, hands down!

Magazine like textbook
By Angel Hiott
This looks like a big, bold, color Martha Stewart magazine but it's about culture. Compared to other textbooks, this book teaches without any of the intimidation that may come with a textbook. It looks, is laid out, and reads like a magazine.

Yes, treat me like I'm an idiot please.
By Michael P
I have had several classes which used these "M" books and the concept behind them is rather insulting. The subject matter is so general and "dumbed down" it makes one feel like the courses using them are a joke. Why, on earth, would I want to take a college course with a "magazine" textbook and pay over $100 for the privilege? Apparently the only way to get students' attention is through general observations, limited theory, few real-life examples, and package it all to look like "Vogue". Honestly, for a book (and the rest of the "M" series) made for academia, it offers little value leaves the students ill-prepared for further study in the related fields. If you are new to teaching Anthropology, Please, please, please use any other book than this. your student evals will be much better for it.
