About the Author

Frank Siccone Ed.D. is an educator, author, and organizational leadership consultant. For three decades he has been offering workshops to teachers and administrators throughout the country, and has conducted youth leadership training for students not only in the United States, but also from Russia, and South Africa.

�

Dr. Siccone has written a previous book on school leadership entitled, The Power To Lead: A Guide For School Administrators On Facilitating Change. His first book, 101 Ways to Develop Student Self-Esteem and Responsibility was co-authored with Jack Canfield (co-author of Chicken Soup for the Soul). His books have been translated into Chinese, Czech, Russian, and Spanish. He has taught classes and workshops at several colleges and universities including the California State University, East Bay and San Bernardino; San Francisco State University; University of California, Riverside; the University of San Francisco; and the Leadership Institute at Yale University.

In addition to his work in education, Frank has also consulted with an impressive list of corporate clients such as Cisco Systems, Hitachi, Intel, Pepsi Cola, Sprint, Sun Microsystems, and Walmart.com. I highly recommend this book to any school administrator who wants and needs insights into how to work effectively with teachers and parents. Dr. Siccone is able to offer practical, easy to access tips and strategies on how to communicate, manage, and effectively support your educational community. Having participated in Dr. Siccone's workshops years ago, I can guarantee he is someone who offers
powerful techniques for generating a productive and successful school environment.

This has been an excellent book to use with new and experienced principals. Reading, discussing and working through this book together has provided a forum for rich conversations and a renewed commitment to doing what is right and best for students. The readily available materials and activities are excellent. We are becoming better leaders because of the work we are doing together in this book.

A Blueprint for School Leaders

Essential Skills for Effective School Leadership by Frank Siccone is sprinkled with many thought provoking quotes and parables. The first, however, from John Quincy Adams, sets the tone for the entire book "If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader." Siccone, from this point forward lays out a blueprint school leaders can follow for transforming a personal vision into reality.

Siccone's blueprint begins with personal development, segues into relational, and team strategies in both human factor and instrumental domains. Within the book's pages are found considerable assessments and worksheets that a leader can apply to any school improvement scenario.

His section on communication and learning styles is cogent. He continually builds on learning style principles in later chapters artfully weaving accrued self-knowledge into practical application.

Siccone's critical contribution to the literature on school leadership is his understanding of the preeminence of context. The author expounds on the concept that successful schools are products of school cultures that promote trust, collaboration, communication, and vision. The book's organization builds on these concepts with how-to worksheets that facilitate school work study teams to transform ideas into actions for their schools.

Siccone identifies the contextual qualities that characterize quality leadership and then provides a usable set of assessment and action tools to bring the vision into reality. Truly Mineralogy for Geologists

The problem with most mineralogy textbooks is that they're written by and for mineralogists. For the average geologist, this can make learning mineralogy unnecessarily difficult. This book solves that problem. It is by far the best intro to mineralogy text I've been exposed to. It wasn't released until after I'd already taken my first minearlogy class and I bought it anyway on a professor's recommendation. I was not dissappointed. I used this book more often as a reference in my last year of geology study (to get my BS) than the text I'd learned from, bookmarked and written notes in. I also used it extensively when I was teaching mineralogy lab as a graduate student and a few of my students found the book so helpful they bought it as well. If you're looking for a great mineralogy text, get this one - even if you're required to get a different one for your classes. If you're a professor - PLEASE consider making this the required text for your mineralogy class. It is excellent.

difficult to put down.

Agree with Mr O'mahoney's recommendation. Section these deviants. Prison doesn't cure anything. It's ridiculous the double standards of the press and police. In the US you have "To catch a predator" where offenders are enticed and trapped in televised sting like operations, before they commit an offence. If a man's intent is to try to abuse a 13 yr old then he deserves punishment before a young girls, or boys, life is destroyed. I come from Bernard's home town of Codsall and am aware of his violent past. He was notorious when I was a teen but having read about his early years and how he has turned his life around all I can say is it's typical of the muck raking press in the UK to soil the name of anyone with a past. This is a fascinating yet disturbing read and surprisingly we'll written. I highly recommend this book.

This edited volume presents a viable argument for anthropology as a needed discipline for not only discovering the exotic 'Other,' but also for shedding light on all kinds of social issues around the globe. The variety of topics as well as the inclusion of quite a bit of material based in Europe was helpful, particularly since my focus is on European Anthropology.

My only complaint is that the Kindle version is very poorly edited. Multiple sentences are missing words--often the first word in the sentence.

Besides having an unusual moniker, 21-year-old Odd Thomas (whom readers first met in Koontz's 2003 novel of the same name) has some very unusual powers, chief among them his ability to see the dead. He can see, feel and talk to them, too (though they don't talk back: "Perhaps they know things about death that the living are not permitted to learn from them"). These days Odd is still hosting the ghost of a morose Elvis Presley, still grieving for his dead girlfriend, Stormy, and still worrying about his very fat friend P. Oswald Boone, whose cat, Terrible Chester, likes to pee on his shoes. Late one night, Odd is summoned by the ghost of Dr. Wilbur Jessup to the Jessup home, the site of a gruesome murder. Dr. Jessup is the father of Odd's best friend, Danny, who is afflicted with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bones. Odd finds Dr. Jessup's body, but Danny is missing. Since Odd has what he describes as "psychic magnetism," he can follow an invisible mental trail, which in this case leads him to his endangered friend. Grieving the loss of his fiancee, killed during the climax of his eponymous debut despite anything he and his supernatural intuition could do, Odd Thomas returns in a more suspenseful but less piquant adventure. Only a year older (21), he feels almost ancient and more rueful than ever about his gift for seeing ghosts, Dr. Wilbur Jessup's in particular. The loving stepfather of Odd's brittle-boned friend Danny was alive yesterday, so Odd investigates, as the "psychic magnetism" that attends his ghost-seeing compels him to, and finds the physician brutally murdered and Danny missing. Odd tracks Danny and his abductors to an abandoned casino-hotel, closed by an earthquake that killed dozens five years ago. It's a trap. Danny is bait to draw Odd to Datura, a spookily self-absorbed, wealthy porn entrepreneur and New Age nut, who, obsessed with violent death, wants Odd to make ghosts visible to her. He can't, but there are eight ghosts in the casino, one of whom comes in handy when Odd escapes Datura and her two gorillas, rescues and hides Danny, and engages in the protracted, lethal game of cat-and-mouse that makes the novel good-to-the-last-page enthralling. Quite apart from Odd's moroseness (understandable given his circumstances and endearing youthfulness), the tale's stranglehold suspense allows for less of the offbeat humor that lightened Odd Thomas (2003). Datura is a creation that allows Koontz some sledgehammer polemicizing against alternative religion and spirituality, which additionally darkens things. Not to complain, though. Flat Villain Leads to Flat Plot

** spoiler alert ** The first half of the book is Odd’s discovery of the disappearance of his childhood friend and the brutal murder of the friend’s stepfather. He searches for his friend Danny, thinking the murderer and kidnapper is Danny’s biological father, a convict. He discovers halfway through the book that the blame, in fact, lies with a different culprit, and spends the rest of the book trying to figure out how to defeat her.

It is out of this structure that my main complaint arises. The villain, Detura, is evil, sadistic, and bloodthirsty to the core. She seeks out ghosts and even the ability to see them herself. She revels in causing pain. In short, she is a flat character. She has no intriguing backstory, redeeming motives, or even moments of uncertainty; she’s just horrible. This flatness, or simpleness, is a great exception to the many other utterly unique and delightful, oxymoronic and relatable, complex characters that inhabit Koontz’s books.

Forever not so odd

I really like Dean Koontz as a writer, and I've enjoyed the Odd Thomas series. With Forever Odd, I found my self about half way through it and struggling to finish it. The energy and the mystery simply was not there. The novel bogs down at several points, and at other points, the narrative turns nearly childlike when Thomas interacts with other characters. The tension in most of the scenes is weak and nearly nonexistent in some others where tension is clearly called for to entice the reader to move through the conflict. In all fairness to Oddie, I read the series out of order with the exception of the first one, so I was able to experience the character's development in a fuller sense. However, if Forever Odd was the first book I picked up in the series, I wouldn't choose another from the series to read.

After the first novel, I wanted more of the rollercoaster that is Odd Thomas and less of a review of the last novel. There were no plot twists as in the first novel and it is my sincere hope this was more of bridge to the third novel which I plan to read.

Your death in your own hands

This book provides clear, detailed instructions on how to bring about one's own death. I feel better having it on hand. A close relative doesn't know who he is anymore, doesn't understand language, and I'm sure he would not have chosen to live or die this way. I definitely won't.
