Fabrication Layout

Not what I was looking for, it is terribly outdated and tedious and extremely overpriced. Years ago I used a layouts made easy book when I worked in the loft in a very large ironworks shop back in the 1970's. I thought that was what I was purchasing or something very similar, a book that simplified everything, that gave you the various geometric formulas and made making something like a square to round frustrum or simple as a cone into a childs project. This was not it. Everything is lay'd out in a series of triangles of various sizes. Would not buy it again or recommend it, I would throw it away but it cost too much, makes a great paperweight.

A moving, lucid call for spiritual renewal

David Walsh's book is far more than a Christian critique of modernity. Through his profound readings of Solzhenitsyn, Camus, Dostoevsky, and Voegelin, he makes a compelling--even thrilling--case that the real "solution" to modernity's systematic impoverishment of our souls' longing for transcendence must come not from the facile rejection of modernity's values but from an immersion and understanding of these values so complete that it bottoms out in despair. Only a purgative suffering of the human and spiritual emptiness of the various ideological solutions can allow us to open our souls to a fresh experience of grace--we must pass through the fire of modern atheism and secular humanism in order to burn free of the unrealities inherent in these systematic rejections of divine order. If the book has a fault, it may be that it is too optimistic about the inevitability of this process unfolding on a large scale; but hope is a forgivable virtue. This is a beautifully written, closely reasoned book capable of changing lives.

On The Way Back From Barbarism

After Ideology is a courageous effort to sketch a postmodern path to the recovery of civilization after a bloody century of ideological war. Democracy is not a stone: it won't subsist on its own. When cut of from its spiritual foundations it becomes deformed and sick. We can continue to wallow in ideological exhaustion and nihilism pretending the 20th Century never happened or we can look at the horror from the "inside" through the eyes of Solzhenitsyn, Voegelin, Dostoevsky and Camus and begin to understand that democracy is as much a matter of spirit as of institutional arrangements.
David Walsh is an excellent guide to the thought of these men (particularly Eric Voegelin) and page after page contains arresting observations which will require the serious reader to engage in profound self-examination. We must find a way out of the ideological box if we are to survive in society. We have not done so yet. After Ideology is a good place to start.

A Meditation for the close of Millennium

David Walsh provides an essential meditation on this rather destructive century. Through his masterful dissection of the life and work of such prescient minds as Dostoevsky, Solzhenitsyn, Camus, and Voegelin, Walsh articulates a visionary understanding of the importance -- at the close of this millennium -- of recovering the spiritual foundations of freedom. Walsh offers an excellent diagnosis on the dead end of "modernity" coupled with a prescription for healing the afflictions of the modern soul -- to ascend from the depths. I first read After Ideology back in 1990 under Professor Walsh's tutelage. Though my overall perspective may have changed since then, I still find Walsh's insight as invaluable now as I did as his student.

Getting Unstuck

Staying stuck in anger can become such a habit, we don't realize how stuck we really are. But staying stuck in anger prevents us from living full and productive lives. F. Remy Diederich's second book is more than a self-help manual. Remy uses biblical principles (without getting "preachy") to help the reader recognize accumulated anger and start the process of healing and restoration. This book reads better than Remy's first book, "Healing the Hurts of Your Past" - in part because it is better organized, but also because Remy's writing style is clearer and more focused. The first half of the book helps the reader identify ways we get stuck in our anger, and the second half moves the reader through a series of steps to start getting un-stuck. Throughout the book, Remy offers journaling pauses to encourage the reader to write down responses to specific questions. Like any good program of self-awareness and transformation, you will get out of it what you put into it. Commit to the process, and join Remy on the journey toward health and wholeness.

THOUGHT PROVOKING.....

Stuck: How to Mend and Move on From Broken Relationships

First off I want to say this is a book I would highly recommend and already have recommended to friends of multiple religious and non-religious beliefs. It's "peppered" with scripture, not overwhelming.

I have to say the beginning information explaining how to read the book seemed a bit drawn out to me, but once I got through it and into the regular chapters it really started flowing and hitting home.

I was initially interested in reading this book because I had recently felt my life as "Stuck". Having multiple health issues, bad choices in the opposite sex, feeling a failure as a single parent and being told I have multiple heart conditions and not knowing how much time God will be giving me. I was stuck which way to turn, what to do, re-evaluating almost 50 years of not quite living up to others expectations and wondering had I really honored God in my life, had I really done the best I knew how at the time for my kids? So I was excited to see where this book would take me.

In chapter 3 where Remy explains about the Look of Anger "rage, violence, swearing,silence", yep been there done that. Then in chapter 4 explaining how to "Understand Anger". The "perceived injustice, Emotional Response, Actions Taken."
I know all parents out there will relate to this. I wish I had this wisdom when my children were small. But it also fits ALL adults, I won't give away more of the book, you must read it to gain value from it and don't worry Remy doesn't just explain the bad he also helps you learn and grow from it and become un-Stuck in your life.

I like the way it is written so that 10 people from various walks of life can read it and come out with 10 different ways on how its just perfect for them. I feel it is a book for anyone not just people in a certain walk of life. It is a easy read and re-read. You can skim through it and then be hooked and read through it slowly and really answer the provoking questions. It's just right for anyone wither you believe in God or not. I feel Remy wrote this for the masses no matter your beliefs or struggles.

This is a definite read for everyone. Give it a try.

Awesome book! A MUST READ !

When I became aware the STUCK was getting published and what exactly the topic to be covered; I knew that this would be my next book of Remy Diederich's that I would own. His words in the pages of Healing the Hurts of Your Past spoke to me as if they were intended for only me. STUCK has caught my attention from the beginning cover and kept me glued to the end.
Anger is one of the short-comings that I have struggled thru for many years. This resource has allowed me to realize that I may not be the only person on earth that struggles with those people who think differently than I do.
I have and will continue to encourage anyone who has struggles with relationship connections to read this book. Awesome read!

If I Were In Her Shoes....

How often I think to myself, "If I were in her shoes, I would...."
In Cara Achterberg's novel, I'M NOT HER, readers get to live out this fantasy through the characters LeAnn and Carin, who do indeed switch places in a strange twist of fate. Although there are lots of campy movies and books out there about switching bodies, this is not one of them. Achterberg's characters are complicated and multi-dimensional and their journeys teach lessons we don't expect. A little boy and his neighbor Mr. G are some of my favorite characters in the book, as they reveal that deep understanding and compassion can come from unexpected places. The main characters, who had taken certain things for granted in life, discover new aspirations and a road to authenticity that made me applaud inside (yay for them!) I'M NOT HER is a great read and a fun story. Highly recommended.

Couldn't Put It Down

“I’m Not Her” was a book club pick so I gathered up my lawn chair and a pencil and headed out to the patio to read for half an hour or so. I brought the pencil because I intended on highlighting things to talk about at the book club meeting. Three hours later I realized that I needed to get up and make dinner. I was so lost in the characters and storyline that time just slipped away. I never made a single mark in the book because I couldn’t stop long enough to pick up my pencil – it was that addicting. There are other enjoyable reads out there, but what makes this one of my all-time favorites is that it puts you squarely in the shoes of someone less fortunate and really helps you appreciate that judging others is wrong. Our circumstances in life make us who we are. Who is to say what we would have become had we grown up without so many advantages? The genius of the book is that it makes this point through characters that you grow to love. I read “I’m Not Her” so fast that I need to read it again before book club so I can remember the details. I can’t ever remember reading a book twice, but I can hardly wait to read “I’m Not Her” again!

More than meets the eye.

Yes, it’s a ‘Freaky Friday’ theme, one we’ve seen before. But it is way more than meets the eye. Cara Achterberg has intertwined the vastly different lives of two women, Carin and Leann. The story unfolds quickly with no real explanation of the paranormal event. But that is okay. Like so many things in real life ‘it is what it is’, just get on with dealing with it. And Ms. Achterberg does just that because she has so much more to share with us. Her characters and their lives feel real. You will worry for them; feel in awe of them; and at times, definitely feel indignant and stunned at what lies below the surface of these two women’s lives. “I’m Not Her” is a quick read, but I believe something about this story will stick with you. I highly recommend reading it because not only is it an interesting, well-written story, it is a reminder that we don’t always see another’s full life. There is almost always more to it than meets the eye.
