I am an experienced English teacher who has taken time to be a stay at home parent for my kids. I bought this book to hone my skills and get ready to start teaching English this fall.
This is a good book for almost new teachers and people like me -- we know enough to get a lot of good out of it and it will enhance our teaching practice. Novice teachers should buy it and wait till she or he have a year under his or her belt; reading specialists could read it to have something to pick apart, and thus, sharpen their chops.

Gr 5 Up-Will Hobbs' exciting adventure tale with historical roots in the 1800s Alaskan Gold Rush (HarperCollins, 2001) is a sequel to Jason's Gold (Morrow, 2001). After much of Dawson City is destroyed by fire, Jason Hawthorn's brothers lose their sawmill to a swindler named Donner. Jason, now 16, and Jamie, his girlfriend, decide to enter a perilous race to Nome in a canoe for a $20,000 prize which they plan to use to recapture the mill. There are 300 entrants, and their major opponent turns out to be Donner who sabotages their canoe. The race is very suspenseful with river travel, destruction of their canoe, grizzly bears, kayaking in the open ocean, a secret shortcut overland, and a shortage of food. An appended note from the author at the end of the story details which parts of the story are historically accurate. Actor Boyd Gaines' steady, but interesting voice contributes to the excitement of the novel. He uses slight voice variations to help listeners keep the characters straight. This suspenseful tale will hold the attention of listeners until the very end.

As if river travel, grizzly bears, a kayak journey across open sea, and a budding romance aren't enough, Jason and Jamie must also deal with ruthless Donner, their main competition in the race. The ending, though predictable, features an appropriate twist. Hobbs includes an epilogue about Jason and Jamie, notes on the historical basis for some of story's characters and events, and a map. Jason's brother Ethan loses the family mill in a poker bet. Jason and his friend Jamie decided they need to enter the Great race to get the mill back. First prize in the race is twenty-thousand dollars. Donner, the man Ethan lose the bet to, said he would sell the mill back too him for three thousand dollars. After days on the Yukon Jason and Jamie get their canoe stuck on a log. After hours of hard work they get it unstuck. Jason and Jamie make up the time by paddling hard. Jason and Jamie see that another family has gotton stuck and decided to help them. They leave there boat on a near by island. After helping the family, Jason and JAmie return to find that Donner, who is also in the race, has chopped down a and it has crusted there boat. Now they have to build a boat. A Nice Ride...

Beginning in the city of Dawson in the Yukon, Jason and his dreamgirl, Jamie, paddle a canoe in a race to Nome against hundreds of others! The time is the gold rush at the turn of the 1900s in the Yukon territory. The setting is colorful, with nods to the gambling, drinking, and dancing that took place during the time. Names from the old west, such as Wyatt Earp and Calamity Jane appear in the tale that gives a good sketch of what was taking place at the time.
The story begins well with a confrontation between the brothers and the Sydney Mauler and carries along well, but it did not seem believable. When Jamie and Jason venture to race together, I wondered how a teenage boy and girl travelling together would have been perceived and was somewhat disappointed that this aspect was ignored. Though Down the Yukon is the sequel to Jason's Gold, it most defnitely stands on its own as a story, and for that Will Hobbs is to be commended... I look forward to reading more of his work.

Down Yhe Yukon, was a very good book it had many exciting and interesting parts. I thought it had some very dull or boring parts to it though. It takes place after the gold rush in alaska with Jason Hawthorn, Jamie Dunavant, and A dog named Burnt Paw. Dawson City just burtn down and Jason lost his job and goes to join a race up the Yukon River to get his company back. He is in the race with Jamie the girl he loves and his dog Burnt Paw who saved from an famous boxer. While this race they go through many difficult and rough times.Its up to whether to see if wins the race now.

In this well-constructed sketch of American-Iranian relations, Takeyh (senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations) critiques the U.S.'s unnuanced approach to Iran since its 1979 revolution as well as the failure of successive administrations to note that decades of sanctions and containment haven't significantly changed Iranian behavior. A picture emerges of a complex society marked by cultural struggle and compromise, as Takeyh criticizes the perception of Iranian politics as monolithic. He concludes that the "chimera of regime change" must finally be rejected, and pointedly observes that "it is rare... for a state that views nuclear weapons as fundamental to its security interests to dispense with such weapons under relentless threats." Takeyh urges America to look beyond President Ahmadinejad to such institutions as Iran's powerful Supreme National Security Council and Foreign Ministry, each of which distanced themselves from Ahmadinejad's anti-Israel rhetoric. Takeyh even suggests areas in which Iran and the U.S. might forge a "selective partnership"—not least their shared need for a stable Iraq. The current standoff between Iran and the West over Iran's nuclear ambitions appears to be a Gordian knot that some urge to be disentangled by resorting to military force. Takeyh wisely places the nuclear issue within the broader context of Iran's relations with the West, and particularly with the "Great Satan," the U.S. Within that context, Takeyh asserts that Americans have grossly misunderstood the complex realities of Iranian political life. As opposed to the image frequently shown in America--a monolithic government controlled by clerical fanatics--Takeyh presents a far more nuanced picture. Despite the recent electoral triumphs of conservative ideologies, Iran remains torn between those who seek a more secular, pluralistic state and those who hope to maintain rigid authoritarianism. The outcome is far from certain, but Takeyh insists the hostile tone emanating from the Bush administration only undermines reformers. Critics are likely to accuse Takeyh of naivete in assuming that our problems with Iran can be solved through dialogue. Still, his assertions and suggestions provide a necessary counterpoint to those who see confrontations and military conflict as inevitable. Jay Freeman

Essential Reading!!

Like many Americans, my view of Iran has been frozen at the time of the 1979 Iranian Revolution with its searing images of vitriolic anti-Americanism. Given the emerging situation in the Middle East, an updated perspective of Iran is sorely needed. Ray Takeyh does a splended job giving a very readable overview of Iran's development from the '79 revolution to the present. He is also very even-handed in addressing missed opportunities by both the U.S. and Iran in forging less antagonistic relations. Iran is a very complex country which requires others to use a nuanced approach in dealing with its tangled web of mixed tendencies. With Iranian influence currently in ascent, "Hidden Iran" is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand this country in greater depth beyond just being a member of Bush's "axis of evil."

Comprehending Modern Day Iran

Thank you Ray Takeyh for writing this informative, insightful book, written in laymen's prose, explaining the history and background that has created the Iran we face today. While not reassuring, Iran becomes not this phasmagorical evil state, but rather a nation state acting out of what it believes to be its own self interest. The final chapter dealing with Iran's entrenched hatred of a Jewish state is the most disturbing and I suspect that is why Takeyh saves it for the end. Yet it is a strange world indeed where the U.S. supplied Iraq with weapons during its decade long war with Iran, and never uttered a peep in protest to Saddam's use of nerve gas on Iraqui soldiers, even to this day, and Iran got a secret supply of weapons from -- and this will shock you -- Israel, which Takeyh infers was with U.S. knowledge and acquiescence. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand this complex and independent country.

Takeyh presents a sophisticated picture of how Iran sees the world and how the world sees Iran. There is useful history here, but most interesting here is discussion of Iran's regional ambitions and game plan for getting what it wants.

Harvard professor Sachs, the noted author of several books on international trade and an economic adviser to over a dozen countries, including Poland, is a major commentator on the awesome task of economic reform in Eastern Europe. In this latest work, he advocates a "big bang" approach to economic reform in Poland and other Eastern European countries. This type of reform (also called "shock therapy") favors the quick conversion of socialist economies to capitalism (featuring the elimination of price controls and the overhaul of monetary policy, among other things), rather than the slow, methodical approach championed by some other economists. Sachs's work is well researched, convincing, and quite fascinating; the method he advocates is already proving effective in Poland. Highly recommended.

Good overview

Filled with simple tables of statistics from before and after transition policies, this book is straightforward, very readable, very enjoyable and useful. Its is pretty short, but covers all the basics for an overview of the process and transformation during what what a very successful and very fast transition. Sachs is modest and cautious in his evaluation of progress-- and yet he had reason to be proud.

Contrast this with "Privatizing Russia" wherein the authors boast about the obvious success of their theories and policy proposals and yet leave the country rife with corruption. This book also covers the theories of privatization and transition a lot less, but instead presents the case of Poland, which can be used as an example. Sometimes one real successful case study is more useful than a lot of high sounding theory.

One important takeaway though, is that Poland had it easy in that it was a small socialized country in the midst of a pretty well functioning European marketplace. As soon as it opened its economy to international trade and foreign investment, competition was introduced to all the firms-- even as they were still nationalized. The benefits of the market were immediate in competition, inputs, prices, etc. Russia had to do without this immense benefit.

Great Narrative

This is one of the best economic books I have ever read. Filled with concise arguments and figures, Sachs makes his case for the liberalization of the Polish economy. Never boring and a very good read, this book is an inside depth into Poland's free market reforms.

DO NOT USE THIS BOOK

This book is, in every way confusing and poorly written. It is poorly organized, making it extraordinarily difficult to understand the fundamentals of assembly language programming. There were also dozens of careless errors, some of which made concepts almost impossible to understand. Professors: Please do not inflict this book upon your students

The worst book on assembler ever written

It's clear the author is not a real author but some instructor somewhere. This book is no more than a bunch of incoherent notes full of mistakes and bad assumptions. Unfortunately, this is used as a text book in colleges. If a professor uses this garbage in class, DROP the class.

Explained the fundementals well. I thought that it was for the most part readable. Sometimes had annoying typo's in examples that made things hard to follow.

Fabi�n A. Samaniego earned his B.A. degree at New Mexico State University and completed his graduate work at the University of Iowa. He also served as assistant director of several Foreign Language Competency projects for the Los Angeles and San Francisco Unified School Districts, and for the Santa Clara and Sacramento County Offices of Education. In addition, he served on the steering committee of the California Foreign Language Teacher Preparation Project and on the California Foreign Language Project Policy Board. He is frequently asked to conduct in-service workshops for schools and universities across the country. Samaniego's first-year college text, D�MELO T�!, is in its sixth edition, and his intermediate text, MUNDO 21, recently published in its fourth edition. He is a co-author of LANGUAGE AND CULTURE IN LEARNING: TEACHING SPANISH TO NATIVE SPEAKERS OF SPANISH and of DIME!, a seven-book school series that includes a two-year native Spanish speaker's program: Tu mundo and Nuestro mundo.

Francisco Rodriguez Nogales is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the School of Modern Languages at Santa Barbara City College. He is a specialist in the use of technology in foreign-language teaching and online instruction--his teaching load has been 100 percent online for the past five years. He also has developed several Spanish assessment and placement tools. Nogales was born in Pedrera (Seville), Spain. He completed his bachelor of arts at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, his master's at San Francisco State University, and his Ph.D. at the University of California at Davis.

Stunningly Different Fantasy

I picked up this book and one other ("Painted Devils")at a garage sale, having heard good things about the author. I had thought they were more on the order of ghost or horror stories. Instead, this book is a cross-genre jewel that really can't be pushed into any easily recognized template. Each story involves somebody getting into a situation where something strange is happening, but can't seem to realize the danger until they are fully involved. Each story is so radically different that in some cases, it's like they were written by a different person. Out of the ten or so stories, there are one or two that don't fully work, but those that do are as original and wonderful as anything I've read in the field. Aickman shouldn't be considered anything less than a master, in spite of the fact that he's not as well known as some of his contemporaries of lesser talent.

Stunning collection of supernatural fiction

I'm currently trying to read my way through the complete Aickman canon. I'm attacking this project with relish. There is no finer writer of a supernatural story than Robert Aickman. He had the literary skills of one of the world's finest writers, and his ability to create spooky and bizarre stories was unparalleled. He is a great author, and it's a shame that his books are not readily available.
This collection is perhaps Aickman's finest. The stories in here are of a consistently brilliant quality. The highlight is the World Fantasy Award-winning novella 'Pages from a Young Girl's Diary'. This story recounts the tale of a repressed young girl who falls in with a vampire. This is Aickman's only vampire tale. He tended toward more intellectual bogeyman, but in this story he shows the world how a vampire story should be written. It is, without question, the finest vampire tale I've ever read. Yes, better than Anne Rice, better than Lumley, better than Stoker, Simon Clark, and on and on. Aickman's literary abilities shine in this story.
Other excellent pieces include 'The Swords' and 'The Clock Watcher'. 'The Clock Watcher' is a creepy tale of a woman with an affinity for clocks. Her husband isn't sure what to make of her obsession and her strange link to clocks of any kind. This story kept me entranced and bedazzled until the end. 'The Swords' is a marvelous novella. It says something about a collection if there's a story of this caliber that ISN'T the best story in the book. 'The Swords' tells the story of a bizarre carnival sideshow with a girl and a pile of swords. I won't tell any more for fear of giving too much away. 'The Swords' is the lead-off story in the collection and it sets the tone. Fabulous.
I can't recommend Robert Aickman highly enough. I'm taking it upon myself as a one-man crusade to spread his name widely. I've only recently discovered the man and I've been ensorceled by his amazing talent. He writes with the ease and flair that's normally found in writers from the 19th century. It's often jarring to find Aickman characters in automobiles or airplanes. His stories, for the most part, could just as easily be set in the 1870s as the 1970s. Aickman is my literary find of the year. Let him be yours.

Take Aickman's cold hand into a strange literary world

Robert Aickman (1914-1981), though he wrote plays and was active in the preservation of England's waterways, is best know for what he referred to as his "strange stories". Those seeking easy genre labels will, no doubt, insist on filing these stories away in the horror section. While this is not a completely inappropriate classification, it is more often than not misleading. At their best, Aickman's "strange stories" often possess many of the qualities of the horror genre (being weird, eerie, grotesque, etc.) while also sidestepping the conventional trappings of the field. My favorite Aickman stories leave me with a sense of unease and grim wonder beyond the ability of any other author I have ever read, the "horror" springing from subconscious realms and working upon those same areas in the psyche of the reader. Themes of alienation, squandered time, and sexual tension seem to be common in Aickman's work and "Cold Hand in Mine" contains elements of all three.
The book contains eight pieces:
"The Swords", "The Real Road to the Church", Niemandswasser", "Pages from a Young Girl's Journal", "The Hospice", "The Same Dog", "Meeting Mr. Millar" and "The Clock Watcher".
The most conventional piece in this collection, and thereby the most atypical for Aickman, is the award winning "Pages from a Young Girl's Journal". This is a fairly straightforward vampire narrative and, while certainly worth reading, not my favorite Aickman story.
All of the pieces in this book, in fact, are worth reading if you are interested in uncommon and literate fiction. There are, however, standout stories. For me these are (in order of appearance):
"The Swords" - An uneasy tale of sexual awakening, exploitation, and high sideshow weirdness with a strange young lady named Madonna (long before and definitely not the pop star).
"The Real Road to the Church" - A quite unconventional "ghost" story in which an unfulfilled woman comes face to face with. . .herself?
"The Hospice" - A motorist lost and low on gas spends a night in the title establishment. A tense and claustrophobic story that impresses itself upon one's mind like a bad dream.
"The Same Dog" - Love lost and cycles beyond human perception.
These four are Aickman at his unsettling and ambiguous best. You will find yourself captivated, moved and shaken by these stories and, if you are at all like me, you will not be sure what has actually happened in the narrative or why it has effected you. Rereading is almost imperative with Aickman's work if you seek to understand it.
Buy this book today if it is available (and consider yourself lucky if it is - it is a tragedy that Aickman's work is so difficult to come by).
