Wonderful book, Buddhism in the Plural

This is not a how-to-do-it book. The varieties of Buddhism are deftly explained, the main schools and the practices in many Buddhist countries. The conventional view is that “the three refuges” or “the triple gem” unites all schools under the banner of Buddhism. This book, however, outlines various interpretations of the Buddha, the Dharma and the Samgha. The author is our guide and immerses the reader in technical terms, but fear not because they are gently explained. Plenty of detail bolsters the author's theme and where else would one find the eleven epithets for the historic Buddha? Brilliantly explained and argued, this is a wonderful book for the serious student, 450 pages, bibliography (39 pages) and index. Paperback can lie flat.

What is going on in this story ??????

I fell in love with the cover and the summary ! I was really enjoying the cute sweet vibe, but then it totally went off track. I loved the progress of lucia and dominic getting to know each other.BUT then I was expecting more chemistry and a REAL reason they would be interested in each other, Dominic was really great I TOTALLY understood why he would partner with Lucy that was a great and believable way for them to spend more time together. Then they got into bed with each other and it just seemed like lucy didn't even like him that much! But then I REALLY didnt care at all for the side characters of Rositta and Marcus it was really boring and I was not attached to them at all and I was totally lost! I was so bored by the whole "situation" with them that I could no longer read I stopped with 3 chapters left and I don't plan to read them ! I would not recommend reading this book I WOLD PASS!

The story focuses on two families who live in an Italian community in Melbourne, Australia. Lucy finds herself pregnant and Marcus her long term boyfriend of eight years and the father of the baby had abandoned her and moved onto greener pastures with his yoga instructor. With an unforeseeable future, Lucy is determined to do right by her baby. Her sister Rosie and her husband Andrew together with their mom Sophie tries to help Lucy along.

Lucy's own business which just barely started off which dealt with delivering fresh groceries to restaurants around the neighborhood brings her into contact everyday with Dom, the son of the owner of her wholesaler. Dom has always had an interest in Lucy but the timing had never seemed to be right for him to show his interest in her. Dom had just recently being divorced and was finally thinking about approaching Lucy when he finds out that she is pregnant.

Problems with Dom's father on the business front ends up Dom asking to be a partner in Lucy's business since Lucy seemed to desperately need the capital needed to boost her business. Though Lucy and Dom are both very aware of one another, Lucy doesn't want the added complication of another man in her life. But Dom and his patience, care and attentiveness all pretty soon convinces Lucy to give him a chance.

However things are far from over when Andrew and Rosie have troubles in their marriage which nearly drives them apart, which in turn causes Dom to pull away thinking that its the best thing he could do for Lucy rendering them both heartbroken. In the end its a happily ever after for all of them which never fails to put a smile on my face.

fine contemporary romance

In Melbourne, in spite of protective sex, Lucy Basso informs her mom and sis she is pregnant; mom does not miss a beat when she says Marcus will need to step up and be responsible. Instead Marcus has dumped her as he is not ready for fatherhood.

Dominic Bianco has always wanted Lucy, but never had an opportunity to pursue his desire until now. He makes it clear he is attracted her, but she refuses to believe he could care for another man's child though he is so tender, passionate and protective of her. Dominic must convince his Lucy he loves her and loves her unborn because that child is half hers.

Ignoring the biological dad as being a selfish dolt unable to accept responsibly or accountability, fans will enjoy this fine contemporary romance between a woman carrying someone else's child and a man who is A NATURAL FATHER and husband at least with her. The story line is driven by Dominic's tenderness and Lucy's doubts. Sarah Mayberry provides a fine relationship drama in which her audience will root for Dominic and somewhat lecture Lucy to move past her doubts and heed her heart and bulging stomach as even the fetus recognizes A NATURAL FATHER.

A Solid and Accessible Textbook on Methodology

The book is clearly written, and I am using it this semester for an undergraduate class I teach. I am not a big fan of textbooks in general, as I rarely use them myself, and when I do, it is mostly for concrete and breif reference purposes. This book is very accessible. I especially liked the chapter on focus groups. The chapter on content analysis is also good, because it conveys very clearly the problems that one faces with this particular method, but at the same time the chapter is not mathematically deep. I find that most of my studnets find this book easy to use. As a book on statistics, it is not very powerful, and the presentation of even the basic methods could use better organization. But overall, this is still a useful text.

A Tough Subject Clearly Explained
By Relating Internationally
I'm a Junior at a large university, and this book is required for my Research Methods class. I've put off taking this class until now, since I'm not very math-oriented. This book explains research ideas in a very simple way, and each chapter has lots of examples from politics. My professor sometimes also has us read the sample articles that the chapters list. This is extra work, but seeing how real researchers use a method helps me understand it. By the way, there is math in the statistics section, but it's not really that bad. If you're not a natural whiz at research, this is the book for you.

Comprehensive Coverage of Qualitative Analyses, but ...

This is a well-organized book (this review incedentally is keyed to the second edition) that will prove valuable to students on their maiden voyage into research methods. This is true mainly due to the excellent treatment of how to turn abstract ideas into operationally meaningful tools of research. This of course is the wheel around which everything else in political science research revolves, and thus cannot be over emphasized.

But it is also true that "practice makes perfect," and thus it would have been very useful for the authors to have demonstrated at least a few "high leverage" examples of how this is done. After all it is true that for students who have never seen it done, this part of the process remains a mystery until they either do it, or see how others have done it.

But altogether, I like the way the authors handled this part of the book. Of course it would have helped to have included even a minimal discussion about the scientific process and in particular at least a cameo discussion of the philosophy of science, which even when unseen, undergirds everything that is going on above.

Which gets me to my criticism of the book. Since quantitative methods were virtually ignored, it seems to me that the word "qualitative" should have been in the book's title? Otherwise, other readers may have done as I did: I kept looking for the section on quantitative analysis? There of course is nothing wrong with restricting the book to qualitative analysis only, but a student in the computer age is not likely to get very far before he is hit in the face with the need for quantitative analysis. Plus, many of the "qualitative methods" require "quantitative analyses" as indispensable adjuncts, for example as tests for validity or as tests of statistical significance, etc. Thus it is difficult to get away from quantitative analysis even when it is completely ignored as a major topic.

Finally, so much of this book is a compilation from other more technical sources that it is an egregious and unforgivable mistake not to include a healthy bibliography of those who are the real experts on each of these techniques. It particularly irked me that in the discussion on the Semantic Differential, the inventor of that technique Robert Osgood, was not even mention, let alone cited. Three stars

Kidd focuses on four major Canadian organizations of the interwar period: the Amateur Athletic Union, the Women's Amateur Athletic Federation, the Workers' Sport Association, and the National Hockey League. Each of these organizations became focal points of debate and political activity, and they often struggled with each other - each had a radically different agenda: The AAU sought `the making of men' and the strengthening of English-Canadian nationalism; the WAAF promoted the health and well-being of sportswomen; the WSA was a vehicle for socialism; and the NHL was concerned with lucrative spectacles.

These national organizations stimulated and steered many of the resources available for sport and contributed significantly to the expansion of opportunities. They enjoyed far more power than other Canadian cultural organizations of the period, and they attempted to manipulate both the direction and philosophy of Canadian athletics. Through their control of the rules and prestigious events and their countless interventions in the mass media, they shaped the dominant practices and coined the very language with which Canadians discussed what sports should mean. The success and outcome of each group, as well as their confrontations with one another were crucial in shaping modern Canadian sports.

The Struggle for Canadian Sport adds to our understanding of the material and social conditions under which people created and elaborated sports and the contested ideological terrain on which sports were played and interpreted.
