He is a hall-of-fame member of the Radiant Panel Association, and a presenter at national and international conferences on heating and building technology. John is principal of Appropriate Designs, a consulting engineering firm in Holland Patent, NY.

Excellent book for a DIYer planning on installing a hydronic radiant system. Gives basically all the information that you need to plan and install a full system. Some of the topics are pretty involved and require some basic math, but the book walks you through everything with great detail. Covers:

1) Determining heating load estimates

2) Required water temperatures and flow rates

3) Pipe installation, including pumps and expansion tanks

4) Several approaches to zoning

5) Laying PEX tube for radiant panels

The book was very useful. The only drawback was the "Hydronics Design Kit" was not included. This costs an additional $76 from Oikos.com and is referred to many times in the book. Therefore, it is almost a requirement during use of the book.

It is written as a textbook for HVAC students, but it serves equally well as a reference and informative design resource for the average homeowner. John Siegenthaler is recognized by his peers as one of the outstanding radiant heating engineers. I highly recommend this book.

I am the director (and sole employee) of a newly formed non-profit. I came to this book with little prior programming experience, and found it to be all I was looking for as far as designing a database to meet our foundation's needs. A real strength of the book is that the author walks you through a wealth of examples, and provides many more to think through on your own--all with answers in the back of the book. So it's almost guaranteed there will be something which matches or parallels what you are trying to do. I read the book straight through, and found the order in which the material was presented to be logical and very well thought out. I also appreciated the dry humor sprinkled throughout this book--I would often find myself perking up and smiling to myself through a subject which a lesser author could turn into tedium.

The database design book for everyone

Database Design Solutions, By Rod Stephens is a book that offers "expert practical experience" to assist the reader in creating a flexible and robust database even if this is your first database. A database properly designed from the start will prove rewarding and beneficial to the users. A poorly designed database, will lead to continuing headaches and frustration for the developer and most likely lost customers.

The book is clear, well written and appeals to the readers. It covers a lot of ground in different chapters. It guides you in developing business rules, explains what normalization is and gives an overview of different types of databases such as Access, SQL and My Sql. It will direct you how to start SQL statements and query constructions.

My feeling is of all the chapters in the book, the best are Chapter 4, Understanding User Needs, Chapter 7, Normalization, Chapter 9, Common Design Patterns and Chapter 10, Common Design Pitfalls. These were the most informative that appealed to me.

No matter whether you are a beginner or an experienced Database developer, this book is a must for you. It will give you the basics to start the development correctly and if you are experienced, it gives you the support to be sure your doing existing databases correctly.

This book is a must read for anyone doing database development.

The Book I Wish I'd Had

Several years ago, I was "volunteered" to design a database - without any previous database experience. I succeeded, and learned a great deal from all the mistakes I made. But I'd probably have had a lot more fun and certainly taken less time if I'd had Beginning Database Design Solutions as an aid and reference. Unlike many database books (indeed, far too many software books in general), it concentrates on designing first, instead of writing code before you know what the user really wants/needs. Chapters also cover creating a database in Microsoft Access and in MySQL, so you can see theory put into practice.

If you're new to databases, this is an excellent place to start. The conversational tone and many illustrations make for an enjoyable read to which you'll refer often. A particulary nice addition is a very handy glossary.

Since it includes exercises, it can be used for classroom instruction; however, solutions are included in an appendix, making it suitable for individual study as well.

Highly recommended.

About the Author
The late Ron Wendt was a gold miner, teacher, and book publisher who traveled extensively throughout the North by air, water, and road. He was raised in Fairbanks and lived in the Wasilla area near Anchorage until his death in 2007.

I own one of the haunted places in the book

I liked the book because it was one of the first books that I encountered that talked about the ghost that haunts our lodge.
Since then I have learned a lot more about the lodge and it's history.

I wish that Ron would have investigated the subject more as he is a great Alaskan writer. I would have liked to seen more history of each place and the events that created the hauntings.

A nice read on a dark winter night in a haunted lodge :-)

Scary Happenings in the Far North: True Tales from Alaska

Haunted tales tell perhaps as much about the people who find them scary enough to repeat as they do about specific ghillies, ghosties, long-legged beasties, and things that go bump in the night.

In "Haunted Alaska: Ghost Stories from the Far North", the stores are mostly from the experience of the trappers, prospectors, and visitors who stay in roadside hotels. The stories seem frighteningly real.

What scares the tellers ---- and could haunt the reader----is mostly the revenants, spirits of people who met sad, bad ends haunting the places they died. That, and there's more scary stuff in the lonely reaches of that vast Alaskan world, vividly told by the author, a skilled story-teller.

All of this makes for good reading around a campfire or maybe on a plane going to Alaska. What I found most haunting about this book in a scary-good way were the pictures. These drawings are eerie and stick in your mind, amazing evocations of Kurtz's "The horror, the horror!"

Recommended for readers who like ghost stories and will be fascinated by what ghosts could haunt a landscape as grand as Alaska.
