Monologues for Teen
By Amazon Customer
Read previous edition and found more interesting monologues, including silly, dramatic, intense.. This new edition had some good ones for my 13 yr old girl. There were quite a few that had the actor repeating phrases in response to an imaginary person, that did not sound natural. These phrases could be redone / removed to allow actor to "act" it out enough for audience to understand. Enough variety of scenes for kids to read through as cold reading practice.

Empire of Difference: The Ottomans in Comparative Perspective, by Karen Barkey

This book is a comparative study of imperial organization and longevity that assesses Ottoman successes as well as failures against those of other empires with similar characteristics. Barkey examines the Ottoman Empire's social organization and mechanisms of rule at key moments of its history, emergence, imperial institutionalization, remodeling, and transition to nation-state, revealing how the empire managed these moments, adapted, and averted crises and what changes made it transform dramatically. The flexible techniques by which the Ottomans maintained their legitimacy, the cooperation of their diverse elites both at the center and in the provinces, as well as their control over economic and human resources were responsible for the longevity of this particular "negotiated empire" Her analysis illuminates topics that include imperial governance, imperial institutions, imperial diversity and multiculturalism, the manner in which dissent is handled and/or internalized, and the nature of state society negotiations.

Review
"If you want to understand how Empires are established, how they flourish and how they vanish, and if you're only reading one book, make it Barkey's Empire of Difference. Here, on impressive display are: an amazing command of six centuries of Ottoman history, a rare ability to illuminate the analysis with comparisons from neighboring empires, and, most important, a never-failing grasp of the theoretical questions that matter. The intellectual ambition of this enterprise is audacious; it is an ambition that is fully realized. It vindicates the promise of historical sociology at the highest level."
-James C. Scott, Yale University

"This book about the past has stunning relevance to the present - and to the future. Karen Barkey has not only contributed to our understanding of empire - she has derived from history lessons that are highly pertinent to the modern, post-imperial world. She combines the skills of an imaginative and disciplined scholar with an intimate personal knowledge of the Ottoman legacy as well as a natural talent for lucid explication and narrative verve. She explains how the longevity of the Ottomans' 'Abode of Peace' was a result of their ability to adapt to changing internal and external circumstances - and how the intercommunal peace itself resulted from Sultans' and viziers' efforts to make a virtue out of diversity. Her concept of a 'negotiated enterprise'-in effect, a social arrangement on a massive scale that relied as much on soft power as hard power-has direct application to the challenges and opportunities for both national and transnational governance today. Altogether an achievement of brilliance, accessibility, and contemporary utility."
-Strobe Talbott, president of the Brookings Institution and author of The Great Experiment

"The Ottoman Empire was one of the most successful and long-lasting examples of legitimate rule over a population characterized by extensive religious, linguistic, and cultural diversity. Karen Barkey convincingly argues that this achievement was due to the Ottomans' ability to maintain openness and tolerance. She draws from a rich literature to argue her compelling case. In retelling the story of the Empire's accomplishments and eventual demise, she greatly succeeds in introducing Ottoman history into the literatures in comparative history and historical sociology. The Ottoman case will now take its deserved place in the growing debate on empires. This book will be mandatory reading for any intelligent discussion on empire."
-ağlar Keyder, Binghamton University, State University of New York and Boğazii University

A great sociological essay on the empire
By Amazon Customer
Karen Barkey's book is most welcome because it rejuvenates sociological theories of empire.

She starts by proposing an "imperial model" (Part I of the book). Here, she uses a social network perspective and suggests that empires "broker" local networks and political units (such as nations etc); this "brokerage" is sustained via a number of institutions from the imperial center that exert indirect rule on the periphery. A counterintuitive conclusion is that empire fosters diversity and shelters difference, much more so than other political regimes (think about how nation-states try to erase religious or ethnic differences).

Then she delves into the transformation of the Ottoman Empire into a Nation-State (Part II). This, in itself, is highly informative. While I am not an expert on the Ottoman Empire, she obviously masters the topic. The empirical material is very well-exposed and confirms the theories exposed in the first part of the book.

The book received two awards in 2009, and rightly so:

The "J. David Greenstone Award" of the Politics and History Section, American Political Science Association

The "Barrington Moore Book Award" of the Comparative and Historical Sociology Section, American Sociological Association (co-winner)

The key takeaway of the book is, for me, as a sociologist, that "empire" is not necessarily something that should be discarded on ideological grounds, rather studied scientifically.

This is a must read for sociologists, political scientists, and historians who are interested in empires and do not fear to reconsider their presuppositions.

superb socio-historic perspective on the Ottoman Empire
By Robert J. Crawford
This is a dazzling and fascinating tour from the establishment of the vast and durable Ottoman Empire to the birth of the Turkish modern state, not from a European perspective but from a near-Eastern one. However, to be perfectly clear, this book is an academic work of sociology as applied to history: it is heavy with the driest jargon, has no narrative whatsoever to it, is frequently repetitive, and demands that the reader know a great deal about not just Ottoman history, but also histories of the Romans, Habsburgs, Russians, and Byzantines. From my reading, I would say it is a graduate-level book. That being said, the ground that the book covers - how to explain the longevity of certain multi-ethnic and -religious empires - is absolutely essential for any serious student of history. This book is the best single treatment I have ever seen of the subject and will richly reward anyone who perserveres with it. While difficult, once I finished it I went right back through it a second time, underlining it with the enthusiasm of a student.

Rebelling against the template of rise and decline, the author seeks to explain what enabled the Ottoman Empire to last from 1300 to the eve of WWI. She breaks down the stages of the Ottoman Empire into 3 periods: 1) the establishment of a vast geographic empire that tolerated and absorbed representatives from virtually all of the major mediterranean civilizations as well as many of Asia; 2) the long struggle to wage (and finance) innumerable wars in the 17th and 18th centuries, which saw the establishment of a more or less Sunni Islamic state that relied on the "privatization" of many essential state functions; 3) the failed transition from empire to nation-state, with the rise of extraordinary violence and exclusion as coherent political entities emerged.

Up to the end of the 16th C, the Ottoman Empire created a state that was ruled in a hub and spoke model, emanating from Istanbul. The Sultan essentially cultivated the elites of conquered territories - preserving their status, offering them some peace and justice, and in stark contrast to the Christian persecutions that were gaining momentum, tolerating and even encouraging religious and ethnic differences among its subjects. The elites were co-opted, but they also saw it in their self interest to accommodate the Ottomans. The religions were a fluid mix of Christian and Moslem variations, that were "syncretic", i.e. feeding off eachother and merging in their forms and even their beliefs; this reflected the balance of ethnicities over which the Ottomans presided, straddling Europe and the Near East. (This would bear serious and deeper investigation. It is genuinely inspiring.)

What is truly fascinating is how Barkey establishes the subtle balances that existed: the non-Muslims accepted an inferior status - a clear boundary - in exchange for autonomy and the designation of circumscribed areas for their own enterprise. Muslims controlled the military with all its booty and glory, the non-Muslims had trade, certain areas of administration, etc. Each community interacted only with the center and did not forge relations across their boundaries. Ottomans in their turn acted as "brokers" between interests, negotiating with extraordinary flexibility and pragmatism and choosing elite members of the communities who would cooperate and in their turn gain advantage. These boundaries also were somewhat porous, with conversion to Islam (exempting converts from taxation, for example) as well as entry by Christian youths into the elite Janissaries warrior class.

Once the Ottomans reached the apogee of their expansion, the world had changed in a number of ways. Other powers with new technologies and ideas, were constantly encroaching on their borders, which were increasingly costly to maintain by warfare. Perhaps more important, with the conquest of the old arab lands, the balance of population shifted decisively towards Sunni Islam, lessening the tolerance for which the empire had become known. This entailed severe restrictions of who could work in the Ottoman court, which lost much of its eclectic mix and flexibility. Nonetheless, even though medresses and an elite ulema were set up by Suleiman the Magnificent, Islam became more or less a tool of the state. Dissent in this period was not tolerated if it had an ideological character that, through ideas, might threaten the the incredible diversity of subtle balances that centuries of negotiation and accommodation had established between communities.

In another vein, the financial stresses of constant warfare led to a decisively important development in the administration of the Empire. To raise funds quickly, the Sultan sold rights to tax farmers, which created an entirely new class of autonomous elites that also moved into commercial trading at the moment that the industrial revolution was dawning. These elites, she says, created "horizontal" relations with each other, supporting the Sultan in many cases (as in his struggles against Janissaries allied with the conservative ulema for deadly shows of force), but also carving out their own areas of interest, injecting political ideas rather than merely territorial concerns into the dialogue with the state. This signaled the end of the hub and spoke model, delegating many state functions to regional actors who gained great power and autonomy while forging new alliances with each other.

Finally, in the 19C, the Ottoman state attempted to modernize itself with the administrative tools of the nation state. Unfortunately, with the many strains of reforms stances that emerged - Enlightenment oriented, Islamic, and nationalist-Turkic - the various nations and ethnic groups no longer felt a part of the compact of the Empire and sought increasingly to extricate themselves. This was 19C nationalism and it tore the Empire apart. The traditional toleration, which has made the Ottoman Empire a beacon of enlightened governance, died. But the world had also become a far more complex place than the command-economies that existed to the end of the 17C.

The author does clearly address the issue of Armenian genocide, which she sees as a product of the Young Turks and their attempts in the context of war with Russia to instill a pan-Turkic ideology (as a new basis of political legitimacy), in essence shamefully turning the violence of the state on "outsiders" within the Empire as a unifying threat. Her treatment of this is curiously muted and dryly academic, but she does not shrink from addressing it even though she is an emigrant from Turkey.

Interestingly, there is no question that Barkey could have written this differently in terms of style. In her introduction, she evokes the differences between her grandfather's attitude (who loved the bounded culture mix that still existed in the 19C empire) and that of her father, who was concerned with the modernization of the Turkish nation after WW!. She probably had to write the book with her sociologist colleagues in mind for obvious career considerations, which is a pity for the interested layman reader as her talent as a writer surpasses that of most academic sociologists.

Recommended with enthusiasm. This is one of the most interesting history books I have read this year.

This is a wonderfully imaginative look at the Ottoman history
By ahmet goksun
This is a wonderfully imaginative look at the Ottoman history. Professor Barkey explains that what made Ottomans so successful was not their military might, or religious fervor, but just the opposite their flexibility, ability to adapt and build coalitions with people and cultures very different than their own.

Eighty Million Eyes (87th Precinct), by Ed McBain

Stan Gifford is the ultimate comedian. A pro through and through, when Stan’s act dies, so does he—in front of forty million viewers from coast to coast, including the 87th Precinct’s Steve Carella. But what seemed to be death by natural causes quickly turns into a case of murder, and Carella must unravel the motivations behind the comedian’s final act.

Meanwhile, Cindy Forrest has been working to put herself through college since the sniper who held the city hostage three years ago murdered her father. But now she’s in the crosshairs, and the only thing standing between her and a killer is Detective Bert Kling of the 87th Precinct.

A pair of spellbinding mysteries full of intricate plotting and razor-sharp dialogue, Eighty Million Eyes is an Ed McBain classic, keeping the boundary-pushing spirit of his 87th Precinct series rocketing forward with gritty precision.

Stephen King and Nelson DeMille on Ed McBain

I think Evan Hunter, known by that name or as Ed McBain, was one of the most influential writers of the postwar generation. He was the first writer to successfully merge realism with genre fiction, and by so doing I think he may actually have created the kind of popular fiction that drove the best-seller lists and lit up the American imagination in the years 1960 to 2000. Books as disparate as The New Centurions, The Friends of Eddie Coyle, The Godfather, Black Sunday, and The Shining all owe a debt to Evan Hunter, who taught a whole generation of baby boomers how to write stories that were not only entertaining but that truthfully reflected the times and the culture. He will be remembered for bringing the so-called "police procedural" into the modern age, but he did so much more than that. And he was one hell of a nice man. --Stephen King

Way back in the mid-1970s, when I was a new writer and police series were very big, my editor asked me to do a series called Joe Ryker, NYPD. I had no idea how to write a police detective novel, but the editor handed me a stack of books and said, “These are the 87th Precinct novels by Ed McBain. Read them and you’ll know everything you need to know about police novels.” After I read the first book--which I think was Let’s Hear It for the Deaf Man--I was hooked, and I read every Ed McBain I could get my hands on. Then I sat down and wrote my own detective novel, The Sniper, featuring Joe Ryker. My series never reached the heights of the 87th Precinct series, but by reading those classic masterpieces, I learned all I needed to know about urban crime and how detectives think and act. And I had a hell of a time learning from the master. Years later, when I actually got to meet Ed McBain/Evan Hunter, I told him this story, and he said, “I would have liked it better if my books inspired you to become a detective instead of becoming my competition.” Evan and I became friends, and I was privileged to know him and honored to be in his company. I remain indebted to him for his good advice over the years. But most of all, I thank him for hundreds of hours of great reading. --Nelson DeMille

NUMBER 21 AND STILL VERY GOOD!
By Mac Blair
Another good one by Ed McBain. This is really two stories in one book as there are two different investigations going on at the same time. One is about Stan Gifford, a TV comedian, who dies while on the screen. Was he murdered or did he kill himself? He was thought to be loved by all but it turns out many, many people connected with the show wanted him dead. Through good police work Steve Carella and Myer Myers close in on the killer. Who did the dirty deed? The other story is about Cindy Forrest and a man who shows up at her office, he won't leave and beats up the policeman who is called. She does not know who he is. Bert Kling is assigned to this case. He has had contact with Cindy in a previous book and she does not like him at all. He tries to get of the case but his LT. says no. Bert spends much time with Cindy but after he leaves her one night the man breaks into her apartment and beats her up. Bert then take off on his on investigtation to find the man. Again through very good lab work and Klings police work the man is finally found. A very good police book that explains how things work and how they are but together to come up with the right answers. In most cases you can't go wrong with McBain.

READ THE BOOK THAT CHANGED HISTORY.... Few books start with the intent of completely rewriting history. This book succeeds. The breakthroughs introduced within this book have proven the existence of a Stone Age world civilization, decoded the 14,000 year old geometric images of Lascaux cave, explained the layout of the Great Pyramids of Giza, rewritten our understanding of Stonehenge, translated the earliest known Stone Age text, describes the location of all the world religious centers, finds Atlantis, and explains the lost religion of the Pagans, and it does all this (and much more) by decoding the stars and The Great Pyramids as an ancient world map. After reading this book you will never look at history the same way again. US B&W Edition Paperback

Bullet Train through Ancestral Lands
By Rush Allen
Read this book with a mind open to communication methods that have been discarded because modern academic rationalism prohibits the natural craftsmanship in us all. Ancients used a form of learning involving talisman devices. The devices are not directly rational because they employ prescience, or the "evidence" of science to a creative craftsmen. A good craftsman "knows" how to create the objects of his craft. Because he is creating the objects there can be no rational basis for the object until it is created. That is prescience, versus academic science masquerading as omniscience.

For example, a mechanic knows his tools and by simply looking at them he can choose them by size and shape. A 1/4-28 screw versus 10-32 screw are identified without rational knowledge or a measuring device. A 3/8 inch open end wrench versus a 10 mm open end wrench are known subliminally by a master mechanic.

The clear fact of the ancient humans is that they occupied most of the Earth. There would have been craftsmen that learned how to use stars as guides to travelers. These craftsmen could etch lines to carry engineering information and the artifacts could be employed to teach the craft.

The use of a talisman like device is what Cunningham does. Then he applies the results to his vast knowledge to "calibrate" the result. In his case he wraps three Mercator star maps on one Mercator Earth map. The result is a huge number of correlations to Ancient Sacred Sites on Earth. Given that the ancients traveled the Earth for over 400,000 years, it would be extremely unlikely not to find sacred sites used for traveling around the Earth. Think of them as train stations. But, Cunningham is bucking a stiff head wind from academic archaeologists because few of them could find the pole star, much less the zenith stars at a hundred sacred sites between Scotland and South Africa.

Assume that the ancient hominids navigated the Earth, as their remains guarantee. Then apply celestial craftsmanship as the means to navigate. A good navigator would know the whole sky using less than a thousand stars. All he would need is an excellent memory for star patterns and then simply travel to the stars overhead at each destination. It is no more complicated than being a professional golfer. The flag guides armatures. But, there are few Tiger Woods in any culture that can guide a ball into the cup holding the flag from five hundred yards away in four shots or less. Those few were the ancient tour guides whose artifacts caught Cunningham's attention.

You will probably have to read the book twice because Cunningham draws you through the 400,000 year long journey in flashes of amazement like the windows on a bullet train.

That is how to begin Cunningham's amazing presentation. Where it takes you is mind boggling. He verifies the ancient adage, "as above, so below." Although he does not say it, his book validates the Science of Religion and exposes the Religion of Science. The subject is the Earth as it is in the Heavens. Both were sacred to our most distant ancestors. Cunningham has restored the Sacred Places as stops along Sacred Routes.

Poorly organized and presented.
By Michael Moch
Currently reading this, and I'm struggling to get through it. The book is rife with grammatical errors. The author cannot seem to consistently spell names or locations - pick a spelling and stick with it, please. Names are important! Rather than citing specific evidence in support of his claims, the author is given to using in-line references along the lines of, "See the works of so-and-so for details." Dude, I'm not going to read ALL the works of so-and-so to support your argument! In the end I have to second another reviewer's voice on this book - there are many conclusions that are fallacious, and the material is poorly organized and presented.

The thing is, I *want* to like this book, as the star-map premise sounds really neat. However, the author does a very poor job of explaining how to construct the star map. How about your SHOW it, step by step, transform by transform? I'm reading the Kindle edition, so it may just be that illustrations and figures aren't as nice on Kindle. But ultimately, it's the author's job to explain, and it's the author who chooses how to distribute his work. At the end of the day, the star map is the whole premise of the book, and if I can't understand how it's put together, then I can't understand your book. There isn't even a pointer to an online resource describing how to make the world star map.

Illogical and poorly organized premise.
By MM
Another rehash of "deep" archaeology, unsupported by consistent facts. Namely that nearly half a million years ago ancient man discovered a myriad of astronomical data (some only "re" discovered by modern people within the last couple of hundred years.) Cunningham tries to support an argument that the ancients shared this information by word of mouth up until 1000 AD - when suddenly everyone from Chinese sages to Polynesian sailors mysteriously forgot to tell the next generation!
This leaves Cunningham to decipher a variety of pictographic evidence that he claims reveals this ancient knowledge, and enlighten the rest of us.
Don't waste your money with this stuff.
(PS. This is (apparently) not the first time he's published this same premise. And he appears to review his own work on various websites.)

Decent book on Vikings
By sbv17
So far I've found it difficult to finding interesting topical well written books for this period. This one isn't bad but it is still a tad dry. It is not a thrilling narrative non-fiction work. It doesn't bring shows like the Vikings to life. But some of its discussions are reasonable.

Separating Exciting Myth From Humdrum Reality
By Bill Slocum
What were the Vikings, where were they from, and when was their age of dominance over northern Europe?

P. H. Sawyer doesn't so much answer these questions in 1982's "Kings And Vikings" as make clear what we know versus what some have theorized, rather liberally, it seems, in Dr. Sawyer's view. This may engage those who have studied Vikings already but will confuse and distance those reading this as their doorway into the Viking world.

The title of the book, along with a quote from St. Augustine's "City Of God," asking "what are kingdoms but fair thievish purchases?" suggests an effort to point to the Vikings' eventual legitimization, a byproduct of their conquests in Russia, France, and the British Isles. But after a brief, neat introduction that presents this idea, the book goes into Sawyer's real concern, which is separating cold hard fact from myth. There is much of the latter and very little of the former, in his view.

Sometimes, he points out, different Viking societies told the same story two different ways. An entertaining example he provides features a dispute between two rulers, Denmark's Sven Forkbeard and Norway's King Olaf. Danish sources present Olaf as the unprincipled aggressor; Norwegian sources present Olaf as pious and cheated out of his wife's land holdings by the scheming Sven.

So the famous sagas of the 11th and 12th centuries that tell of Viking life are dismissed as "dynastic propaganda" and suchlike told too far after the fact to serve as anything other than wishful historiography. Ancient runic inscriptions are likewise to be taken with grains of salt; they may not be as ancient as we think. Hoards of coins suggesting the Vikings may have had dealings with Islam can't tell us much; even dated coins can be misleading.

Sawyer also works to dispel some myths. He doesn't go after the more obvious ones, like the horned helmets and the use of enemy skulls as drinking vessels. He does question the notion of the "blood-eagle sacrifice" where victims had their lungs pulled out of their living bodies, rejected by Sawyer on the basis of other sources he doesn't describe in detail.

It's like that a lot in this short, oft-frustrating book; Sawyer presents ideas only to shoot them down, like an academic piata party. When he does get to describing something in a straightforward manner, as with a chapter deep in this short book about the Viking raids in France, England, and Ireland, it is well-presented with the idea that Vikings were not pirates so much as happy-change agents who were as much influenced by as influencing what they encountered.

"It is, indeed, my hope that this book will stimulate discussions that will contribute to its own obsolescence," Sawyer writes in his Preface. That may be the best way to read the book, as a carefully-presented-if-dry marker on Viking studies circa the early 1980s rather than as an introduction to the Viking story itself.

An interesting overview
By Fred Camfield
This is a somewhat brief overview of a four century long Viking period, starting with groups that were like tribal mauraders gathering loot, and progressing through periods of colonization and eventually established national governments. It was not that far back that Sweden was a msjor power in Europe, controlling an area much larger than present day Sweden. The Danes briefly controlled England and Ireland before being driven out. Rollo established a much more enduring kingdom in Normandy. Many of us alive today are descended from various intermarriages.

The author tries to separate fact from myth, a major endeavor. Storytellers writing sagas tended to use a great deal of literary license. There are undoubtedly true facts behind stories like Beowulf, but it requires some interpretation to separate the facts from fiction. One can wonder about the legendary Sigurd, slayer of the dragon Favne. Much of what we know comes from the so-called Icelandic Sagas.

The author does provide a good general picture of the period. Three was established trade in commodities ranging from fur and amnber to slaves (yes, original slaves were white). There was an established social order of freemen, freed slaves, and slaves. The author mentions the practice of weregild, i.e., the payment of money to the family of someone whom you killed - a practice that still exists between tribes in Afghanistan.

Overall, it is a good book to read if you have an interest in the society of the Viking period.
