Short thorough to the point great book. So good I ordered 10 more to give away. So few people are willing to take the iniative to develop close friendships & today's generation has resigned to keeping in touch via Facebook. This book addresses so many things I've been saying lately. The lament I hear from others is that it's hard to make new friends but most wonder why others don't reach out yo them when they need yo have the courage to make the first move to see where it goes. Instead of being disheartened that it doesn't Foster reciprocity, move on until something sticks. + learn to love your own company.

a fun book

This is a fun book. It is a satire that takes place in 1964 and involves ex-debutante Maxie Mainwaring exploring career paths while getting caught up in some mob activities. It is full of earnest exclamations, alliteration, and the vocabulary of the time. The sex scenes are mild but are described with humorous analogies pertinent to the time period.

Yes, this is another 5 star review. But this book deserves it. It's a fun, light-hearted (and maybe light-headed) read about the adventures of rogue debutante Maxie Mainwaring and the denizens of the Magdalena Arms women's residence. Maxie is disinherited by her bossy mother and forced to get a jobs. More accurately, she is forced to get a series of jobs which put her on the trail of a dreaded Scandinavian crime syndicate, run by an unexpected 'queenpin.'
'Maxie Mainwaring' has been called a spoof of 50s pulp fiction. Not being an expert on 50s pulp fiction, I can't confirm or deny, but it was a fun read. I see the author has at least one other book on the denizens of the Magdalena Arms and another (Dolly Dingle, Lesbian Landlady) coming out in September. I'll probably give those a try. She also has a book of lesbian horse stories, but I'm not sure about that. I'm not really into horses.

Great Read!

I'm not a fan of sci-fi or out of this world space adventures but my curiosity was piqued as I read the description of this read. So, I thought why not have a change of pace and read something out of my "normal genres?"
I love the cover of this book...that was another selling point for me...but as I began reading this story I thought this isn't weird as at all. In fact. this story begins like a mystery. A son, a missing dad, a friend, and a mystery to solve.
There's just something about Jack that makes the reader feel at home...a likable guy, with a good head on his shoulders and kind.
Then there's Jack's best friend, Rudy, a true blue kind.of.friend.
So, off Jack and Rudy head to find Jack's missing father. Jack and Rudy meet Ben, an Indian of sorts, who knows the lay of the land and the caves. Ben helps Jack and Rudy find there way.
Now about chapter 14, page 115, the reader feels like he has stepped into the Twilight Zone. Ben And Jack are trying to find their way out of the caves and come in contact with the N'watu tribe...underground cave dwellers. This is where the action really begins and where the story starts coming together.
Then other people begin coming...Elina, Javier, George, Dwight, and Miriam, to name a few. Jack can't quite figure it all out but there is something strange happening....
I loved this read and found the ending..."Welcome to Beckon. You're not here by chance." almost ironic considering the whole of the story.

Non Stop Action

If you are looking for an action packed story with little to no character development, this is it.

Three 'outsiders' come to the town of Beckon for different reasons - Jack comes looking for his father or for the lost tribe his father had been searching for when he disappeared. George is lured to Beckon with the promise of a cure for his wife's Alzheimer's. And Elina follows her cousin's kidnappers to Beckon. All three find what they are looking for - and all three pay dearly for their discoveries.

Certainly, the details of this story show imagination - and the 'evil' is depicted in a believable way, in spite of its having no basis in reality. But there is only so much non-stop 'action' and 'danger' that I can enjoy. If there has been no connection with the characters in danger, soon it is just so much running, escaping, shooting, eating, and dieing.

Speaking of dieing.....this is a story in which too many people die. I was going to say 'everyone, except...' but I don't want to spoil the ending for those who want a 'strictly action' story.

Since Tyndale is a 'Christian publishing house', I expected there to be some kind of inspiration in this book. A way that the characters (or even just one character) lived out their faith throughout the story - or comes to faith at the end, after all the difficulties. There is really just one instance of this - George's wife, Miriam stands for what is right and faces her own mortality with faith, giving her husband a chance to be free. This is the only bit of inspiration in the book - and it is isolated. Miriam's actions do not seem to greatly affect even her husband, much less the story.

I am sorry for having to write a negative review, but I really did not enjoy this story - I kind of 'endured' it. (I do normally enjoy action, suspense, and mystery genres, just to be clear.)

Jules Verne dances in the dark with David Lynch

Another well done book by author Tom Pawlik. I'm a big fan of his first two books and couldn't wait to snag the new one as soon as it came out. Fun, rapid and easy read that is full of thrills, excitement and his own strange slant (a slant he self-admits in the "About the Author" bio at the end of the book...so I'm not bashing him). Unlike other reviews, I'm not going to rehash the plot line here. My take is a bit of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" meets "The Descent" mixed with Frank Peretti's "The Oath" shaken with "Twin Peaks". If a mixture, in any proportion, of these meets your own inner weird, you'll have a ball reading this book.

About the Author
Keith Richards is Professor of Geography at the University of Cambridge, where he is also a Fellow of Emmanuel College. He has been a member of the Department (University Lecturer, Reader, then Professor) since 1984, and before that was at the University of Hull. He originally graduated from Cambridge, both at Bachelor and PhD levels. During his career he has published in several areas of geomorphology, but his main research focus has been in fluvial geomorphology. He has been Secretary and Chairman of the British Geomorphological Research Group, and an editor of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms. He has written or edited nine books and about 150 papers.

His research interests have also included glacial hydrology, catchment and hillslope processes, and innovation in modelling and monitoring approaches in geomorphology and hydrology (such as terrestrial photogrammetry, MRI, computational fluid dynamics, and discrete element methods). He has also worked on the interaction of fluvial, hydrological and ecological processes in floodplain environments, including the roles of channel migration dynamics as a control of floodplain biodiversity, the roughness effects of woody riparian vegetation, and hydrological influences on floodplain ecology. His interests also range from the more philosophical aspects of field-based environmental research, to the application of research to practical problems (in, for example, Honduras, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Thailand, as well as in the UK and Europe).

Crackles With Energy and Promise

I'll make this brief: if THE MINUS FACTION: BREAKOUT were the first episode of a promising new television series -- and it has the tight, fast-paced writing of one -- I would have been crying out at the end of the first episode, already eager for more, ready to become a fan.

THE MINUS FACTION is, on its surface, the story of an unlikely superhero; a crippled, broken soldier who can inhabit the bodies of other people. While stark and uncompromising, both the story and the main character are surprisingly compassionate. Regent, though in many ways remniscent of a gritty antihero, has a lot of heart, and it shows through in the story. The action is fast-paced and clean, the dialogue concise and pointed. And there's a great cliffhanger at the end. What more could you want from a serial?

I don't know what future installments have in store, but I will be checking out the rest of the series as they become available.

Best one yet...

First, let me say I read all genres of books. I try to leave reviews on everything I've read, but so many were before the internet... gasp! Reading all genres since the discovery of the wide world of web has fulfilled me in so many ways. As has the genre this author writes in... be it a sci-fi, thriller, a gunslinging fantasy horror, or a sci-fi pulp mash-up.

I have read all of Rick Wayne's books. I loved them all, each unique and different from the other. This one, however, is my favorite so far. It runs deeper. He places his paw print on each character, imprints them, and brings them to life so vividly. He's a master word crafter and world builder. This character, Regent, is a broken man on the outside, with so much left to give and live for on the inside as you will find out. I laughed at the wit, I cried the moment a scene touched my heart, I gasped at the atrocities, and I could not put it down until I had devoured the whole book in one setting. I will impatiently await the next episodes. Kudos, Rick Wayne.

Comic book thriller with depth and heart

This book kept me turning the pages from start to finish. It starts as we meet Captain John Regent, a horribly disfigured veteran. His body is trapped in a wheelchair but his consciousness wanders, giving him the superheroic power to hitch a ride in other people’s bodies for a time. As we learn more about John and the shadowy forces that are after him, the pace of the story never lets up. But more than a simple thriller-meets-comic book plot, Wayne gives his characters a realism, depth, and heart that makes you care for all of them.
My only complaint: I wish I could read the whole story now rather than have to wait for it in serialized doses.

About the Author

Rafael C. Gonzalez received the B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Miami in 1965 and the M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, Gainesville, in 1967 and 1970, respectively. He joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) in 1970, where he became Associate Professor in 1973, Professor in 1978, and Distinguished Service Professor in 1984. He served as Chairman of the department from 1994 through 1997. He is currently a Professor Emeritus at UTK.

Gonzalez is the founder of the Image & Pattern Analysis Laboratory and the Robotics & Computer Vision Laboratory at the University of Tennessee. He also founded Perceptics Corporation in 1982 and was its president until 1992. The last three years of this period were spent under a full-time employment contract with Westinghouse Corporation, who acquired the company in 1989.

Under his direction, Perceptics became highly successful in image processing, computer vision, and laser disk storage technology. In its initial ten years, Perceptics introduced a series of innovative products, including: The world's first commercially-available computer vision system for automatically reading the license plate on moving vehicles; a series of large-scale image processing and archiving systems used by the U.S. Navy at six different manufacturing sites throughout the country to inspect the rocket motors of missiles in the Trident II Submarine Program; the market leading family of imaging boards for advanced Macintosh computers; and a line of trillion-byte laser disk products.

He is a frequent consultant to industry and government in the areas of pattern recognition, image processing, and machine learning. His academic honors for work in these fields include the 1977 UTK College of Engineering Faculty Achievement Award; the 1978 UTK Chancellor's Research Scholar Award; the 1980 Magnavox Engineering Professor Award; and the 1980 M.E. Brooks Distinguished Professor Award. In 1981 he became an IBM Professor at the University of Tennessee and in 1984 he was named a Distinguished Service Professor there. He was awarded a Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Miami in 1985, the Phi Kappa Phi Scholar Award in 1986, and the University of Tennessee's Nathan W. Dougherty Award for Excellence in Engineering in 1992.

Honors for industrial accomplishment include the 1987 IEEE Outstanding Engineer Award for Commercial Development in Tennessee; the 1988 Albert Rose Nat'l Award for Excellence in Commercial Image Processing; the 1989 B. Otto Wheeley Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer; the 1989 Coopers and Lybrand Entrepreneur of the Year Award; the 1992 IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award; and the 1993 Automated Imaging Association National Award for Technology Development.

Gonzalez is author or co-author of over 100 technical articles, two edited books, and four textbooks in the fields of pattern recognition, image processing and robotics. His books are used in over 500 universities and research institutions throughout the world. He is listed in the prestigious Marquis Who's Who in America, Marquis Who's Who in Engineering, Marquis Who's Who in the World, and in 10 other national and international biographical citations. He ii the co-holder of two U.S. Patents, and has been an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man and Cybernetics, and the International Journal of Computer and Information Sciences. He is a member of numerous professional and honorary societies, including Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Eta Kapp Nu, and Sigma Xi. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

Richard E. Woods earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His professional experiences range from entrepreneurial to the more traditional academic, consulting; governmental, and industrial pursuits. Most recently, he founded MedData Interactive, a high technology company specializing in the development of hand-held computer systems for medical applications. He was also a founder and Vice President of Perceptics Corporation, where he was responsible for the development of many of the company's quantitative image analysis and autonomous decision making products.

Prior to Perceptics and MedData, Dr. Woods was an Assistant Professor off Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee: and prior to that, a computer applications engineer at Union Carbide Corporation. As a consultant, he has been involved in the development of a number of special-purpose digital processors for a variety of space and military agencies, including NASA, the Ballistic Missile Systems Command, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Dr. Woods has published numerous articles related to digital signal processing and is a member of several professional societies, including Tau Beta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, and the IEEE. In 1986, he was recognized as a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus of the University of Tennessee.

Understood quite a lot...

This is a good introduction to image processing.
The first chapters introduce the readers to the fundamentals of human vision and how the brain processes light, contrast and color. The examples are clear and understandable.
As the book progresses, the subjects become more complex and mathematically-oriented. I found that I could follow up with those topics in which I had prior background, like intensity transformations, spatial filtering, filtering in the frequency domain, color image processing, image compression and image segmentation. In these topics I understood most of what they were explaining, except maybe the last pages of each chapter.
When it came to chapters where I was weaker or not familiar at all, I have to admit that I was able to keep up only with the first pages of each one. More specifically: Wavelets and multithreshold processing, morphological image processing, representation, fuzzy logic and object recognition. These chapters became muddy very quickly, and I only got a general feeling about what they were explaining.
Maybe someone with an electrical engineering background (myself being mechanical/software) would understand better the advanced topics.
I plan to read them again once I have a practical need or use for those areas.
The book does not contain code samples but it has quite a lot of practical use examples with pictures.
In summary, I understood roughly 65% of the book and would recommend it to anyone who needs a better understanding of image processing.

The best in the field

Gonzalez & Woods (3rd ed) is not only the best single reference in the field of image processing, but it is also one of the best technical books I ever read, in any field. Text and examples are clear, mathematics is at the right level to be precise, formal and understandable as well. You'll learn a lot about many things in this book.

Even better than the first edition

This book is a wonderful read about image processing. Having read most of the 1st edition (yes I'm reading all of the 3rd), I can say that this 3rd edition is larger (yet not insurmountable) with more examples, explanations, mathematical development and new material. I'm currently in the chapter about frequency domain processing and must say that the previous chapter about spatial domain processing is more robust, even now including a good introduction to fuzzy logic. Anyhow, with a good background in applied math and Matlab programming, this material is easy reading for me, but should also be accessible enough for anyone with a general technical background.

As a student of medicine, I appreciate The Person Behind the Syndrome for the intrestesting backround of the lives and times of those Doctors who came before mt. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to know more about a disease, than just the basic science, and a list of signs and synptoms. I found The Person Behind the Syndrome to be an excellent tool to help me remember the vast list of conditions I must know for boards, and beyond. Enjoy !
