Baseball cards, the rich man's children's toy
By Michael
Have baseball cards? Want to know about how much there worth? Well here you go, has most everything in it except a couple things I could not find. I wish the whole thing was organized by year first rather than set name, it would make things much easier for me. I'm a very lapsed collector of cards so this was fun to look up things I remember from the past.

Excellent Book on Exadata!
By Rich Niemiec
This is a very comprehensive look at Exadata with many helpful commands, queries, graphs, and images. It starts out easy and becomes more advanced as you progress through the chapters. Most chapters stand by themselves - so you can learn different subjects at any pace, or even just leverage a query or two.

- The first chapter assumes you don't know anything about Exadata and explains all of the components that make of different Exadata machines (including graphs comparing different machines).
- The next two chapters discuss RAC on Exadata (includes many helpful RAC commands) and Exadata Storage Cells in depth including various CellCLI commands.
- There is a chapter on the smart scan & using the flash cache with many helpful queries, comparison graphs, as well as initialization parameters.
- There is a very detailed look at HCC (Hybrid Columnar Compression) with exactly how it is stored and how it works. It includes comparisons for various compression levels showing consistent gets vs. db block gets.
- There is a chapter on 12c and Exadata (I wish this one was a bit longer) that includes some of the new features including pluggable databases.
- There are chapters on Networking, Backup & Recovery, and Managing Exadata with OEM 12c (Cloud Control).
- There is a very helpful chapter on migrating to Exadata and a detailed chapter on patching (careful).
- There is a chapter on Tuning including queries to check and leverage the new features on Exadata as well as two advanced chapters on the Smart Flash Cache & Flash Configuration as well.
- It finishes with Tools and Utilities that include different O/S commands and outputs, OEM 12c, and SQL queries and their outputs.

Overall, if you are an Exadata beginner it will take you to the next level. If you are more advanced, it will fill in some of the gaps you may have in various areas and help you to become the expert. Well worth reading!

Three early novels from the glory years of Spenser for Hire
By Lawrance Bernabo
This collection brings together the fifth, sixth, and seventh Spenser for Hire novels by Robert B. Parker, representing the early glory days when our hero was trying to figure out how to make things work with Susan Silverman and Hawk was always around to help do the good deeds. The key thing is that Parker refuses to fit into a restrictive formula at this point and that his books are perfectly suited for those who spend time reading as a way of enduring the commuter lifestyle.
"The Judas Goat" (178) offers some twists on our hero as he travels to Europe and needs the assistance of Hawk to do his good deeds as we learn that apparently Spenser cannot do everything by himself. Spenser is hired by a millionaire industrialist who was crippled in the terrorist bomb blast in a London restaurant that killed his wife and daughter. Hugh Dixon will pay Spenser $2,500 for each of the nine members of the gang, dead or alive. Spenser's plan is to go to London and find himself a "Judas goat," someone in the gang he can turn to get at the others. Of course, since this is a Spenser novel the case proves to be a lot more complicate. This is one of the fastest paced novels in the series and features a most efficient Spenser, which seems a strange comment given all the waiting he does in this novel. On the personal front his relationship with Susan is progressing nicely (apply appropriate adage involving distance). The final twist that takes our hero to Montreal is a bit over the top, but if you remember events from the summer of 1972 it is not so far-fetched.
In "Looking for Rachel Wallace" our hero is hired to protect the title character, a radical lesbian feminist who has been receiving death threats because of her latest book "Tyranny," which is about people in high places who discriminate against gay women. To no one's surprise Rachel Wallace does not take well to Spenser's sense of humor, the way he dresses, his chosen avocation--okay, she does not like ANYTHING about him. But she needs protection and he can carry on an intelligent argument, so there is some level of respect. Everybody is worried or at least wondering what Spenser thinks about lesbians and radical feminists, and there are several feisty conversations along such lines between the pair, but the actual subject under examination in this book turns out to be Spenser himself, although most of the insights come from Susan Silverman instead of the Rachel Wallace. There is a point where Spenser explains if anything happens to him, Hawk should take up the case. Susan points out she does not know how to contact him and Spenser assures her that if anything happens Hawk will show up and ask if she needs anything. Susan talks about the implicit code that binds Spenser, Hawk, Quirk, Healy, etc., and I suddenly realize that Spenser has been NETWORKING! The first half of "Looking for Rachel Wallace" deals Spenser trying to do his job until he offends the writer's political sensibilities and is dismissed. As you can tell from the title, the second half of the novel brings changes the nature of the case and even though he is no longer employed to care, of course he takes responsibility for everything that has happened. The most unique part of this novel is that Spenser makes some serious mistakes (I even spotted a key clue way before he did), so he is not as on top of his game as usual. You especially know this is true when Spenser gets beaten up in a fight and apologizes several times for what he says. More than any other novel to this point in the series, "Looking for Rachel Wallace" gets to the heart of the character, understandably knocking him off stride to reveal the true nature of the man.
With "Early Autum" we again find a new twist in a new Spenser adventure. This time our hero is hired by Patti Giacomin to find her son Paul, kidnapped by his father. Spenser finds Paul almost immediately and it quickly becomes clear that neither parent really cares about the boy, who is just a pawn in the wake of an ugly divorce. Paul needs someone to teach him, well, just about everything (except how to shrug; the kid does that really well in response to literally every question asked by Spenser throughout the entire book). "Early Autumn," a metaphor for a 15-year old kid who has to grow up really fast, finds Spenser talking more than any of the previous books, although at the end his detective skills will again come into play. A large chunk of the book is Spenser and Paul talking about a whole bunch of different topics. In doing so, Spenser explains his view of the world, a task usually left to Susan Silverman. There is also an unforgettable twist as Hawk lends a hand at a key moment.
Can you beginning with "A New Collection of Three Complete Novels" and pick up the Spenser for Hire series from there? Certainly. But there is something to be said for going back and doing this series from the beginning. Early on the point is more the cases, but as the series progresses it becomes more about the relationships. Not just the major ones with Susan, Hawk, and Paul, but also those with the growing supporting cast, which includes Rachel Wallace.

Three early masterpieces from the master of detective stories.
By Dallas Gorham
I read all three of these novels years ago when I first discovered the great novelist Robert B. Parker and his famous detective Spenser--the Man With No First Name. In re-reading them from my viewpoint as a mystery writer myself, Parker is the master of the craft. These three are a bit shorter than some of his later works, but they are every bit as satisfying. Good plots, good action, well-developed characters.

fantastic mysteries!
By Kindle Customer
I love Robert B. Parker mysteries - especially his Spenser series. The plots are amazing, the diaglogue intriguing and fun to read. The banter between Spenser and Hawk is so funny. I highly recomment any and all of Parker's Spenser mysteries. Once I read one, I had to get all 40 and read them in order. I am hooked and only wish he'd written a lot more!

A Database Management System (DBMS) is used to create databases. Most of today's applications deploy databases to store information like names, addresses, account balances, etc. This information can be accessed and manipulated by application programs to perform business processes (like payroll processing, sales processing, and customer billing). Every DBMS requires database administration to ensure efficient and effective usage of databases by applications. This means that every user of Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, DB2, Informix, Sybase, mySQL, Teradata, PostgreSQL, Ingres and any other popular DBMS will benefit from the information in this book.

Many organizations have multiple of these products and will benefit from a consolidated view of DBA that does not focus on the internals and nuances of each particular DBMS product. Such a view is presented in this text. This book provides the industry's first non-product based description of database administration techniques and practices. The book defines the job of database administrator and outlines what is required of a DBA in clear, easy-to-understand language. The book can be used:

* As a text for learning the discipline of database administration
* As the basis for setting up a DBA group
* To augment a DBMS-specific manual or text book
* To help explain to upper-level management what a DBA is, and why it is required.

Every organization that deploys databases using a DBMS needs to understand the concepts outlined in this book. Many small to medium organizations attempt to implement DBMS products without DBA. This book explains the practice of DBA and can be used to educate these organizations as to the necessity of DBA in order for DBMS implementation to succeed. Other organizations implement only subsets of the DBA practices that are covered in this book. With a thorough reading of Database Administration: Practices and Procedures, it will become quite clear that a comprehensive approach to DBA is required. This book examines and explains each of the components that comprise the discipline of database administration.

As technology advances new IT techniques emerge that impact the discipline of DBA. Two such areas are Internet-enabled database access and storing procedural logic in the DBMS in the form of triggers, user-defined functions, and stored procedures. Because the impact of these newer technologies and techniques on the role of the DBA is examined in this book, even seasoned database professionals will find the book useful. Indeed, the book will be helpful for any and all of the following folks:

* Anyone who want to understand what DBAs do
* DBA Managers
* IT professionals who want to become DBAs
* IT professionals new to implementing a DBMS
* Students of Database Management
* DBAs
* Systems Programmers and System Administrators who interface with DBAs and need to understand what it is that DBAs do

Because this book covers heterogeneous database administration without focusing on just one DBMS, it can be used by organizations to set up a DBA function when more than one DBMS product is being used. This is particularly important because Gartner Group, the industry analyst firm, estimates that most medium to large organizations have from 3 to 10 different DBMS products in use that require administration. The single-DBMS shop is a rarity these days.

Additionally, DBA positions are currently very hot, with DBAs demanding and obtaining very high salaries. As such, many technicians aspire to become DBAs and this book will help them to do just that. If you are an IT professional with interest in becoming a DBA, this book will help you to achieve that objective.Other books about database administration are available, but they approach the subject from the perspective of a single DBMS. Many of these books are quite good. I wrote one myself for DB2. This book is not intended to replace such books, but to augment these books with an independent treatment of database administration tasks. How to Use This book

This book can be used as both a tutorial and a reference. The book is organized to proceed chronologically through DBA tasks that are likely to be encountered. So, if you read the book sequentially from Chapter 1 through Chapter 23 you will get a comprehensive chronological overview of the DBA job. Or you can read any chapter independently if you wish because each chapter deals with a single subject matter. References to other chapters are clearly made where appropriate if other material in the book would aid the reader's understanding.

Comprehensive, thorough and unique
By Mike Tarrani
This book has three things going for it:
(1) It describes the DBA function as it exists in the real world. More importantly, it breaks the categories of "DBA" out into specialities, such as system DBA, data architect, analysts and modelers, developers and data warehouse DBAs - each speciality is vastly different in practice - and provides skill profiles and roles and responsibilities for each.

(2) Proposes an organizational structure for all DBAs, regardless of database (DB2, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.) and skill. As a consultant who specializes in IT organizational management and processes I heartily endorse this structure. It's also consistent with recommendations made in "IT Organization: Building A Worldclass Infrastructure " by Harris Kern, Stuart Galup and Guy Nemiro, and "Building Operational Excellence: Strategies to Improve It People and Processes" by Dale Kutnick and Bruce Allen.

(3) A complete and comprehensive listing of tasks and responsibilities for DBAs, ranging from creating the database environment to data warehouse administration, and everything in between (data modelling, performance and capacity management, tuning, back-up and recovery, etc.)

While achieving the recommendations for organizational structure is a daunting and complex task, assimilating the extensive list of tasks and recommendations can be accomplished quickly. One way to attain immediate value from this book at the organizational level is to derive database administration policies and processes from this book, and refer to this book for the procedures.

The ideal audience for this book includes IT managers who need to understand the complexity and scope of the DBA function under their cognizance, senior DBAs who want to implement consistent procedures, and HR specialists who develop job descriptions and recruit DBAs.

Highly Recommended
By Sal Ricciardi
This is a well-written, well-organized guide to the practice of data base administration. Unlike other books on general database theory or relational database theory, this book focuses more directly on the theory and reality of database administration as practiced by database professionals today, and does so without catering too much to any specific product implementation. As such, Database Administration is very well suited to anyone interested in surveying the job of a DBA or those in similar but more specific roles such as data modeler or database performance analyst.
Yet, even with that direct focus on database administration, the author succeeds in covering a great deal of ground and cutting a rather wide swathe across the database spectrum, doing so with rigor and expertise and the benefit of experience. While the book will not and is not intended to serve as a reference substitute for product documentation, it will nonetheless enhance your knowledge, and I find it of such quality and utility that I recommend it to anyone in the database field in general. Consider it a base text to serve alongside Date and Codd.
Among the nice touches, the author includes discussion of database denormalization, often missing in discussions on database design. Chapters end with both a set of review questions and a Suggested Reading section, and I find myself in agreement with most of the suggestions. An excellent Bibliography section follows the text. I would have liked to see some discussion of the difference between relational domains in theory and their implementation in practice, particularly as it impacts the design of integrity constraints. Even so, Database Administration is an excellent book and I highly recommend it.

A great referecne on database administration
By Frank Lu
1. This is one of very few titles on general database administration. Most other similar books focus on particular DBMS products.
2. It has a very comprehensive and broad coverage on the subject. The table of contents speaks for itself. Due to its extensiveness, the coverage by and large stays at the strategic and conceptual level, which serves its purpose very well.
3. It compares features of major database products on handling similar jobs.
4. The author clearly has extensive real life DBA experience with different DBMS products and has shared that with a very easy to understand language.
5. It has good resource links.
6. This book would be a great introduction and reference to those who are not only interested in a particular DBMS product but would also like to have a holistic view of database administration.
7. Finally the book has 660 pages before the index rather than 352 pages as stated on this site.

Good premise but actual content is off-putting and puzzling at times
By Chicago Book Addict
The premise behind Welcome to the Real World: Finding Your Place, Perfecting Your Work, and Turning Your Job into Your Dream Career is that when you are making the transition from college to the working world so much emphasis is put on getting that job, but no one really tells you how to navigate that first post-college job once you've got it. I could 100% relate to feeling like this when I was taking on internships and later graduating from college and agree with the author that there really don't seem to be any business books serving this market. Most seem geared toward mid or senior level employees so there is definitely a need for this kind of book. That said, for me, I'm not sure this book adequately fills this hole in the market because there were just too many things I found off-putting or puzzling about this book.

First, there's the advice itself. Given how much it is touted in the marketing copy that all the rules have changed and your parents can't help you, I was shocked how much of the information is common sense, tried and true information. Yes, there is some content involving social media, but the bulk of the more helpful tips in the book were things I've also had passed down to me by professors and my parents. I think perhaps the biggest difference between the advice you'll get here and the advice you might get from a parent is that Berger doesn't assume any prior knowledge about the working world and shares some very basic things that more seasoned professionals might overlook. If you haven't had much experience in an office environment I can 100% see where that would be a benefit, but it also means that if you have had a significant amount of internships or have already settled into your career, a lot that is here will seem painfully basic. This really is, at its heart, a book for novices. I also found it odd that some of her advice is weirdly specific, think step by step instructions to do your boss's expense reports, send e-mail, and schedule meetings. Basically, it seemed really skewed towards tasks that would be done if your first job is an admin role. Also, in her chapter on common problems all of her examples, except for one, feature people working in a communication field. Nothing about the marketing led me to believe this was only a book for people in those industries so I'm not sure why she didn't make a better effort to be more inclusive and to include stories and examples from a broader range of fields. I do work in advertising, but if I didn't I definitely would be reading this book questioning whether the advice she was given was even applicable to me or whether she had consulted anyone in the industry I worked in. To me this seems like a huge miss. That said, this book isn't completely devoid of good advice. I thought what she had to say about rejection was sound and something you are often not taught at college and also thought the advice about related to Millennial-specific stereotypes was sound as well.

I also found the author's personal stories distracted from the function of the book and undermined her credibility. There was just too much name dropping, bragging, and promotion of her company for my taste, not to mention stories that didn't really have anything to do with the topic at hand (i.e. her roommate who taught her about the cool clubs and cool places to shop.). And some of her stories, frankly, made her sound incredibly clueless. I'm sure her intent was to make herself sound the like an every girl and to let the reader know that if she could find success, anyone could. But personally it left me wondering why I should trust her. At one point she says, "I thought that as long as I showed up and did as I was told, I was going to impress my boss. I didn't understand that just because I was friendly and came to work on time didn't mean I was good at my job." Personally I found it shocking that someone who had 15 internships during school and refers to herself as an "Intern Queen" would think this way. Maybe I'm the exception, but I felt like this was something that was drilled into me in college long before I ever had an internship.

Basically, I do think she makes some good points here and there, you just have to wade through the book in order to get there. If you are a college student about to embark on your first internship or job it might be worth skimming through this book, but I'd recommend getting it from the library rather than buying it out right.

I wouldn't bother having my daughters read this (much, much less my sons)
By famousdavis
QUICK SUMMARY: While I applaud the author's ambition and success, this book really isn't that good on a number of fronts. There are so many other, better books on the market to help a young adult transition from college into the business world, I wouldn't waste time or money choosing this particular book to help with that transition.

BACKGROUND: I'm not a reader who fits the author's target audience. She's writing strictly and solely to young girls, young women (the book's title or subtitle, however, don't make that clear). But I have young women in my household, so I read this book thinking about them. Would I want my daughters to read this book as preparation for adulthood? No.

WHAT I DID NOT LIKE:

- The book's title or subtitle ought to indicate that the author is writing strictly to women. I don't object that the target audience is young women; I object that the book's title, subtitle and even the back cover don't make that clear.
- The author uses vulgarities throughout the book. I get that in some professions that's not a problem or issue, but it IS an issue in many other professions and workplace environments. Lead by example, Ms. Berger. You may be comfortable saying (even writing) mild vulgarities and obscenities, but I've never admired a woman (or a man, for that matter) who swears so easily.
- The author offers too many clichs that don't need to be offered, and once she offers them, the ideas aren't well-developed enough to keep them from remaining clichs. Example: "Think about the consequences" and "Never settle". Or how about, "Don't accidentally send a message to someone you didn't mean to send it to." Really!?!
- The author presumes too much about the kind of job her readers have, then offers advice which is too specific to be helpful to her full audience. Example: How to help your boss fill-out his/her expense report. That's suitable advice for an administrative assistant, maybe, but I can think of a thousand jobs a young woman might hold where she'd never need to fill-out her boss's expense report.

WHAT I DID LIKE:

- The author had a definition of "success" which to me was incomplete, but I liked what she had to share: "Success means being happy in the way you're spending your time every day. Success is being able to constantly grow and learn, to make mistakes and then pick yourself up the next day."

BETTER RECOMMENDATIONS:

There are so many other, better books for young adults to read as they prepare to enter the business world. Try this book instead, for example:

- The Rules of Work, Expanded Edition: A Definitive Code for Personal Success (Richard Templar's Rules)

CONCLUSION: Skip this book.

I wish I had this when I graduated from college!!
By Lindsey Day
I absolutely love this book. I remember how nervous and uncertain I felt when I first graduated and landed my first job in the entertainment biz. Lauren is the big sister you wish you had to help you navigate the murky waters of the first "real job." Her relatable tone and funny anecdotes will set any recent grad at ease. I will definitely be passing this onto my "mentees," and the advice (adding value, staying organized, work-life balance) is a great reminder even if you're further along in your career. Definitely recommend!!

A must read sales script book.
By Nathaniel Lewis
This book was definitely a good read. The 3 most important skills that stood out the most to me was the 3 A’s from this book, which is attitude, acknowledge and move on, and assume the sale. Some people think sales scripts are stupid but not knowing how to answer people can result into a lost sale. More importantly what I got from this book is to listen and be patient with your client. Listening will result to sales conversion when you can be patient and fulfill your client’s need.

Not What the Title Suggests
By Amazon Customer
This book has many typos. I suppose if one is interested in hard and fast telemarketing this is a good primer. If one wants a book that fits a more contemporary view of telephone sales, try Smart Calling. The book seems slapped together and produced for a quick buck. The author has other books much the same. It is short, and all of the information in it is amply available online for free via Google. The one point made in the book worth listening to is the importance of taking time to pause while speaking to clients/customers. The book does not especially discuss 5 Sales Scripts ... it's the same hard sell message over and again. I had thought that the book would provide pointers on techniques for preparing/modifying scripts. Disappointing.
