Collon's book provides an excellent overview of Near Eastern Seals. A useful chronology for both stamp and cylinder seals is provided, as well as information on materials, designs, and stone-cutting techniques. The majority of the photographs and text focus on cylinder seals, but a few stamp seals are also included.

Well illustrated, it is written by one of the leading authorities in the world on material of this nature. I have to admit philosophy is my weakest subject. I started two courses in it in college and dropped both of them. I don't understand anything about it. The book appears to be well organized and well written.

From Wikipedia "Jean Grondin, OC (born August 27, 1955) is a philosopher and Canadian professor. He is a specialist in the thought of Immanuel Kant, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Martin Heidegger. His research focuses on hermeneutics, phenomenology, German classical philosophy and the history of metaphysics.

After completing his philosophical studies at the University of Montreal, he wrote a thesis on the concept of truth in hermeneutics in 1982 at the University of T�bingen, where he also studied classical philology and theology. He taught at Universit� Laval, in Quebec City from 1982 to 1990 and at the University of Ottawa in the academic year 1990-1991.[1]
Grondin has taught at the University of Montreal since 1991. In addition to his authored volumes, translated into more than twelve languages, he is also the author of many articles in various philosophical journals. His two volumes on Kant continue to be authoritative and his major contributions on the universality of hermeneutics and phenomenology place Grondin in a Platonic philosophical tradition that goes back to Augustine and passes through Kant, Edmund Husserl, Heidegger, and Gadamer. He can be seen as the principal advocate for the work of Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur and is prominent in contemporary hermeneutics.
He was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada on December 30, 2012.[2] In 2014 Jean Grondin was awarded the Molson Prize."

Amazing book ! Written in a clear, orderly and insightful fashion, this short book offers a superb overview of the history of metaphysics. It contains valuable insights regarding the thought of leading philosophers such as Descartes, Kant and Heidegger, and above all, establishes links among them that are quite new and original. I feel it is ideal both as an introduction to philosophy in general, as well as to the specific subject of "metaphysics" or "ontology". A well deserved five star rating.

About the Author
RALPH BAIERLEIN received his PhD from Princeton University; his thirty seven years of classroom teaching were spent at Harvard and at Wesleyan University, Connecticut. He has published papers in astrophysics, cosmology and relativity theory. For eight years he served as book review editor of the American Journal of Physics, and has written many papers related to the teaching of physics. In 1996 he was elected a fellow of the American Physical Society.

Wish Author Were Giving A Lecture

Fun book if you can keep with it and most everyone should. Not technical or mathemetically challenging! Enjoyed the stories and asides... my son says I'm just like the author. Get to the point. This is a story book (not surprising given the title) although it's being used as a text book for a summer course with no other notes for guidance. Sometimes the questions at the end of the chapters are very simple but some are difficult to answer because the answers aren't sitting out in the open waiting for you to snap them up. You gotta be thinking. Wish there were answers in the back. Would have been fun companion reading in th day when I was taking this [...]

Mostly well written, but generally lacking quantitative examples.

Dr. Baierlein quotes Sigurd Olson on the opening page of the second or third chapter so he started on my good side right there.

My complaint is that while Dr. Baierlein goes through great pains to explain, verbally, the mathematical formulas that describe light, he is remarkably stingy with numbers. For example, in Chapter 6, as he is describing the absorption of light and the resulting ejection of electrons from a metallic surface I keep wishing he would throw in some numerical examples rather than just describing how the formula works.

He describes "the maximum energy of an electron after it is ejected" and I keep thinking, "DUDE!, would it KILL YOU to give a numerical example?" 100 joules? .00001 joules? 10^-49 joules? He could have just added a sentence saying "The material constant for [for example] zinc is "b" so the maximum energy of an electron ejected from zinc would be "Y" Joules if the surface is illuminated by light with the frequency of "f"".

This book is clear and very interesting. It teaches the general idea of light and modern physics. It can be too simplistic at times for technically minded people.
