Jean Grondin completes the first history of metaphysics and respects both the analytical and the Continental schools while transcending the theoretical limitations of each. He reviews seminal texts by Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, and Augustine. He follows the theological turn in the metaphysical thought of Avicenna, Anselm, Aquinas, and Duns Scotus, and he revisits Descartes and the cogito; Spinoza and Leibniz's rationalist approaches; Kant's reclaiming of the metaphysical tradition; and post-Kantian practice up to Hegel. He engages with twentieth century innovations that upended the discipline, particularly Heidegger's revival of the question of Being and the rediscovery of the metaphysics of existence by Sartre and the Existentialists, language by Gadamer and Derrida, and transcendence by Levinas. Metaphysics is often dismissed as a form or epoch of philosophy that must be overcome, yet by promoting a full understanding of its platform and processes, Grondin reveals its cogent approach to reality and foundational influence on modern philosophy and science. By restoring the value of metaphysics for contemporary audiences, Grondin showcases the rich currents and countercurrents of metaphysical thought and its future possibilities.

Well organized, well written
By doug korty
"Metaphysics belongs to "human nature." It is neither a division of academic philosophy nor a field of arbitrary notions. Metaphysics is the fundamental event of our existence. It is our existence itself." Martin Heidegger, What is Metaphysics from the first pages
I have to admit philosophy is my weakest subject. I started two courses in it in college and dropped both of them. I don't understand anything about it. The book appears to be well organized and well written.
From Wikipedia "Jean Grondin, OC (born August 27, 1955) is a philosopher and Canadian professor. He is a specialist in the thought of Immanuel Kant, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Martin Heidegger. His research focuses on hermeneutics, phenomenology, German classical philosophy and the history of metaphysics.
After completing his philosophical studies at the University of Montreal, he wrote a thesis on the concept of truth in hermeneutics in 1982 at the University of Tbingen, where he also studied classical philology and theology. He taught at Universit Laval, in Quebec City from 1982 to 1990 and at the University of Ottawa in the academic year 1990-1991.[1]
Grondin has taught at the University of Montreal since 1991. In addition to his authored volumes, translated into more than twelve languages, he is also the author of many articles in various philosophical journals. His two volumes on Kant continue to be authoritative and his major contributions on the universality of hermeneutics and phenomenology place Grondin in a Platonic philosophical tradition that goes back to Augustine and passes through Kant, Edmund Husserl, Heidegger, and Gadamer. He can be seen as the principal advocate for the work of Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur and is prominent in contemporary hermeneutics.
He was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada on December 30, 2012.[2] In 2014 Jean Grondin was awarded the Molson Prize."

Great introduction for all kinds of public
By Ronald Fernandez
Amazing book ! Written in a clear, orderly and insightful fashion, this short book offers a superb overview of the history of metaphysics. It contains valuable insights regarding the thought of leading philosophers such as Descartes, Kant and Heidegger, and above all, establishes links among them that are quite new and original. I feel it is ideal both as an introduction to philosophy in general, as well as to the specific subject of "metaphysics" or "ontology". A well deserved five star rating.

Great introduction!!!
By Kristopher M Thornton
Starts right from the beginning of the question of Being (as far as a 101 student is concerned) and discussed the ideas of numerous philosophers in plain English. The vocabulary is fairly advanced, and while discussing each topic the author mentions title where that particular philosopher's primary views can be found.
