Battle Off Samar worth the stiff price

This is the most detailed account I have ever found about the incredible courage of the "tin can sailors" and light carrier crews who battled the huge Japanese surface fleet at Leyte Gulf. The book itself was originally self-published, and is a bit crude by big-time publishing company standards, but the content is pure gold. There is a detailed description of most of the ships involved in the battle, and many eyewitness accounts. If you are a WWII buff, this book is for you!

I just finished reading "The Battle Off Samar - Taffy III at Leyte Gulf" which was written by a nephew of a survivor of the great battle. I have to say this is how a battle book should be written. Some folks criticized the style, but I found it was exceptional. If you like detail, this is the book for you. Buy it with confidence. I can not say enough about the quality and dedication of the author. LOVED IT!
Basically, it was one of the first attacks by the Japanese to hold their southern supply lines off the Philippines. They were repulsed by a small group of "tin cans". These were smaller unarmoured ships. The gallantry and bravery of these men was incredible. My favorite story was of the USS Johnston commanded by Captain Evans. He was last seen, shirtless, bloodied, with one hand bandaged and steering his ship from the fantail. Even after he was badly damaged, he kept fighting with only one engine and no bridge. He was the first to take action, the first to fire and the first to score hits. He was a badass warrior.
